Three GM Designers to Paint a Corvette Stingray During a Fundraising Gala at a Detroit Museum

The 2014 Corvette Stingray has already been acclaimed around the world for its beautiful and trend-setting design.

Now three General Motors car designers are going to take it a step further, helping the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) Gala Fundraiser today.

The three GM Design employees – Casey Swanseger, 30; Tyler Mars, 28; and Haneif Katebi, 25 – will be using paint and brush on a 2014 Stingray, bringing to life Detroit’s “creative corridor” made up of industries that merge art, technology, and business.

“Creativity is the basis of everything in life, from fine arts to innovation, from design to manufacturing,” said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of Global Design and honorary chairman of the MOCAD gala. “What better way to demonstrate inspiration and creativity than by having these young GM designers, who helped create the new Corvette Stingray, transform it into an art car during this event.”

The designers have experimented ahead of time, but the final creative concept won’t be revealed until the gala. They’ll be using acrylic, water-soluble paints to create a contemporary art design on the white vinyl-wrapped Stingray, all set to music played by a disc jockey. They plan to use brushes and paint bottles to paint the Corvette in 45 minutes with a mix of patterns.

The three GM designers will be following in the footsteps of famous artists like Andy Warhol, Peter Max, and Frank Stella, who have all turned race cars into rolling works of art in the past.

GM and the GM Foundation have been a supporter for years of organizations like MOCAD, which help young artists develop their skills and inspire future generations to pursue creative arts careers, in the process helping Detroit’s economy grow.

“There is a lot of creative energy in the city and helping our youth harness it early is essential to a vibrant Detroit and museum,” said MOCAD Executive Director Elysia Borowy-Reeder. “In the past year, MOCAD’s Teen Council, workshops, teacher K-12 advisory group, and student docent programs have made contemporary art and design accessible to nearly 12,000 youth.”

Welburn praised the Corvette art car project’s blending of experimentation, design and passion, which he said he can help create awareness of careers in creative arts and the impact on the city’s economy.

This is a great opportunity to encourage and inspire creativity in young people, either in the automotive industry or other professions,” he said.

Tickets for the MOCAD Gala Fundraiser and Art Auction can be purchased at the MOCAD website, http://mocadetroit.org/gala/.

We can’t wait to see what these GM designers come up with!
