Corvettes

2008 Corvette Coupe
The C5/C6 Bash at the National Corvette Museum has wrapped for another year and as is generally the case, there was some interesting news coming straight from the folks at GM. This preliminary 2008 Corvette Model Year Data slide was presented in one of GM’s forums at the Museum over the bash weekend. The data is from start of production through April 2nd and shows the production numbers for each model as well as some of the more popular options with model penetration.

Despite our penchant for stressing out over the latest monthly sales numbers, production appears to be moving along at a clip reminiscent of the 2006 model year when just over 34,000 Corvettes were produced. With the preliminary sales data showing 27,872 through April 2nd, conservatively estimating production at 2,500 units per month over the next two and half months puts us over the 34,000 mark.

[VIDEO] New Corvette Pace Cars Hit The Indy 500

by Keith Cornett on April 23, 2008

Running the Brickyard in a 2008 Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car

“Welcome to the adult version of Christmas.” That’s what one speaker calls the day when the keys to all those Indy 500 festival cars are passed out. IGotShotgun was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 500 Festival Committee Meeting which culminates in members receiving the keys to their very own 2008 Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car and then taking them for some laps around the speedway.

We counted at least 50 of the 30th Anniversary Indy 500 Corvette Pace Cars and to see them lined up on the fabled brickyard is something special. The E85 Concept Corvette Z06 was also at the track showing what it can do.

Some of the dignitaries went for a hot lap with 2-time 500 Winner and this year’s official pace car driver Emerson Fittipaldi or Corvette Racing’s Max Papis. In this next video, “Mad Max” Papis takes IGotShotgun for a 180 mph hot lap around the 2.5 mile oval.

Festival members have use of the Corvette through the month of May and then the cars are sent to various dealers where they will be sold as official Indianapolis 500 Festival cars.

30th Anniversary Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car

Late last year with much fanfare, Chevrolet announced that for the first time ever two Corvettes would be pacing the Indianapolis 500. One of the Corvettes is the customized Z06 E85 Concept highlighting GM’s Green Initiative and will showcase the ability of the automaker to run even the Corvette on E85 Ethanol. But it was the second Corvette that is even more interesting in our opinion as it marked the 30th Anniversary of the 1978 Corvette Pace Car and would be commemorated by a special run of 500 Pace Car Replicas.

With only 500 of these special editions available, you would think that these Indy Pace Car replicas would be in demand and sell fast, but from the conversations we’ve had with several high-volume Corvette dealers, that just doesn’t appear to be the case. Here is what we’ve been hearing as the major roadblocks to sales of the 30th Anniversary Corvette Pace Car and why we think owning this special edition is a smart investment.

Dealers may be bypassing this year’s Corvette Pace Car replica because last year model didn’t sell well. Many point to the late entry of the replica into the 2007 production model run. The 2007 Corvette Pace Car Replica didn’t hit the lots until June, well after the running of the Indianapolis 500. We also believe that demand for last year’s Pace Car was tempered by news of the 2008 Corvette models which featured a new, more powerful engine and interior upgrades. As a matter a fact, that news is attributed to an overall decline in sales of all 2007 Corvettes.

Last year, Chevrolet offered two special edition Corvettes at the same time, the Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Championship Z06 and a Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car replica. Buyers overwhelmingly gravitated to the Ron Fellows Z06 Signature Edition. This year, Chevrolet again offered two special edition Corvettes at the same time: The 427 Limited Edition Corvette Z06 and the 30th Anniversary Corvette Indy Pace Car Replica and guess what? Buyers again gravitated first to the Z06.

So why is the 30th Anniversary Corvette Indy Pace Car Replica a smart buy? The first is economics. No, I’m not saying buy this car and you’ll make money on it. But you will lose less money because of its limited production of only 500 cars. Recent history shows the depreciation of the Corvette Pace Cars will be less than an average coupe or convertible Corvette and will generally start appreciating first and faster than their regular production counterparts.

1998 Indy 500 Corvette Pace CarTake a look at the 1998 Corvette Indy Pace Car. 1,158 of the Purple and Yellow Corvettes were produced. It’s 10 years old now and the five year depreciation number for the Pace Car replica is -19%. However, the 1998 Corvette Coupe’s five year depreciation is -26% while the 1998 Corvette convertible was down -29% over five years.

1995 Indy 500 Corvette Pace CarThe news is even better for the 1995 Corvette Pace Car. Only 527 of these Corvettes were built and over the last five years, the Pace Car has appreciated 19% while the regular production Coupe was down -7% and the roadster was down -12% over the same time frame. The Pace Car’s appreciation is even higher than the 1995 ZR-1 which shows an 8% increase.

The second reason we like this year’s Pace Car replica is that it’s offered in either a Coupe or Convertible model, and the option choices will all but guarantee that there will be some interesting combinations when its all said and done. We already know that there are no major changes for next year’s Corvette model so that hurdle has been removed. And forget the “All Corvettes are Red” mantra. The Indy 500 Pace Car is finally back in black, the number one selling Corvette color.

Lastly, the Pace Car is signed and numbered by 2-time Indianapolis 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi, making this Corvette only the third model in the car’s 55 year history to feature a signature. We’re still hoping that in the future this honor is reserved only for those who’ve had a direct impact on the Corvette and the enthusiast community.

So the final question you should be asking is where can I get one? We suggest getting in touch with Dave Salvatore at Kerbeck Corvette who told us they have several available. Dave can be reached at 1-877-537-2325 . Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Jim “Z” of Spitzer Chevrolet who was kind enough to answer our inquiries for this story.

Corvette Z06 Black Edition by Geigercars

by Keith Cornett on April 19, 2008

GeigerCars Corvette Z06 Black Edition

German-based Geigercars was already well known in Corvette tuner circles for their performance engine enhancements and wide body kits. So when they turned their attention to the Corvette Z06, something special was bound to happen. GeigerCars calls it the Corvette Z06 Black Edition.

The Corvette Z06 is already ahighly tuned machine with 505 horses available for the driver. GeigerCars managed to up the performance of the LS7 7.0L V8 to a whopping 592 horsepower. And then there’s the body. The Z06 Black Edition matches the car’s sinister performance with a blacked out body. Very intimidating. The only trace of color comes from the red brake calipers behind the black 5 Spoke Corvette rims. The rear fascia has been redesigned and features a set of smaller diameter taillights that remind us of a Ferrari. And while its different than a stock Z06, we’re okay with it.

eBay: Charlton Heston’s 1999 Corvette For Sale

by Keith Cornett on April 15, 2008

Charlton Heston's 1999 Corvette Coupe

I think I’ve mentioned my affinity for guns, whisky and Corvettes in a previous post and although I can’t really claim the “all American guy” trifecta with this story, Meatloaf would say “two out of three ain’t bad”.

Charlton Heston, actor extraordinaire and 2nd Amendment rights champion was also a Corvette owner. His 1999 Black Corvette Coupe is currently listed for sale on eBay as the current owner looks to cash in on the death of the movie icon. The Corvette is a mostly stock automatic with just 18,500 miles. The current owner claims the only changes were new LED halo taillights, C6 style chrome wheels and a Borla Stinger exhaust system. The original factory rims and taillights also come with the car.

If you’re contemplating the purchase of the Corvette previously owned by Moses himself, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got more documentation than just a pencil with bite marks. Luckily for you, this Corvette comes with the actual registration and insurance card with “Chuck” Heston’s name and Wilshire Blvd address.

The auction runs through April 17th and the current bid of $20,800 has yet to break the reserve. “Cold Dead Hands” jokes aside, with the provenance of celebrity, this Corvette would give bragging rights to any owner.

1955 Corvette - Serial #1

Mecum Auctions has announced they will be selling a collection of three serial number one Corvettes at June’s Bloomington Gold High Performance Auction in St. Charles, Illinois. The Collection of early C1 Corvettes includes VINs 0001 from 1955, 1956 and 1957. It’s a rare sale when any serial number one Corvette is sold, but a collection of three in sequential model years is simply unheard of. The auction for this troika of 0001′s is sure to the highlight of the High Performance Auction held June 27-28th.

The 1955 Corvette is the last of the early C1 body style and the first to offer a high performance 265 ci 195 hp V8 engine. In 1956, Corvette received its first redesign with the cove body style that has become one of the most famous designs in American automotive history. Finally, 1957 Corvettes marked the last year for the single headlights and are known for their performance.

1955 Corvette - VIN 001 1956 Corvette - VIN 001 1957 Corvette - VIN 001

The collection was amassed in Rockford, Illinois in the late 1970′s by Tom Harmer, a collector who recognized the significance of owning serial number one Corvettes. In the early 1980′s the collection was sold to Gene Morton who moved them to Alaska where they were stored and protected. The three Corvettes resurfaced in Prescott, Arizona around the year 2000 where they were purchased by renowned collectors Al Wiseman and George Swartz.

Al Wiseman is well known for his restoration work, having restored and sold several 1953 Corvettes over the last few years. Back in December, Al auctioned his collection of serial number #39 Corvettes which included a 1953 Corvette and its 2003 50th anniversary counterpart. A commemorative 1953 Corvette pedal car rounded out the collection.

Dana Mecum, President and Founder of Mecum Auctions said “This is the only collection of three sequential serial one Corvettes known to exist in the world. Al and George have restored these three Corvettes to the highest Bloomington Gold standards and to the magnificent state they are in today.”

The cars have never been entered or shown at the Bloomington Gold Corvette show or any other event since restoration. The three sequential serial number one Corvettes will be offered for sale as a collection.

New Paint Chips Revealed for 2009 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on April 13, 2008

New 2009 Corvette Paint Chips

As we get closer to the unveiling of the 2009 Corvettes at the Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash later this month, we’re learning more about the changes – both deletions and additions – that will accompany next year’s Corvette model. CorvetteConti.com has posted an image showing the two new exterior colors: Cyber Grey Metallic which we all know from December’s unveiling of the Corvette ZR1, and Blade Silver which will replace the popular Machine Silver. The other colors shown are not Corvette colors, but check out that Summer Yellow and tell me it doesn’t remind you of War Bonnet Yellow.

Many might not realize but Machine Silver was the third most popular color on the 2007 Corvette, following only Black and Victory Red as the exterior color of choice. In fact, since its inception on the last of the C5 Corvettes in 2004, Machine Silver has consistently ranked as one of the top colors with each model year, besting fan favorites LeMans Blue and Velocity Yellow. Machine Silver has been listed as a production constraint over the last few weeks and is now officially discontinued.

The new color, Blade Silver (RPO Code 17U) appears to be slightly darker than Machine Silver based on the chip, but we all know that to judge a color correctly, it must be seen on the car and outdoors.

The two new colors are available on all four 2009 Corvette Models: Coupe, Convertible, Z06 and ZR1.

We’ll have more on what’s new with the 2009 Corvette in the coming days. In the meantime, you can download the 65 page 2009 Corvette Ordering Guide.

Corvette Sting Ray on Location for Star Trek Movie Shoot

This will be my second movie-related post this weekend, both of which are related to 60′s television shows and midyear Corvettes. J.J. Abrams is bringing yet another Star Trek movie to the big screen next year and according to some of the fan blogs, there’s quite a bit of flashbacks going on, including one that involves a 1965-66 Red Corvette convertible with a white soft top and hubcaps.

The reason we know this is that someone related to the location shoot caused a traffic accident while turning into the location set. TV cameras from KERO showed up and caught the Corvette on the back of a special car hauler.

The Bakersfield CA location is supposed to be Iowa (sans mountains!), the home state of Captain Kirk. We’ll have to wait to see the movie to understand what a classic Corvette Sting Ray has to do with Space…The Final Frontier.

Win The $100,000 Speed Racer Mach 5 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on April 11, 2008

Speed Racer Mach 5 Corvette
We’re pretty psyched about the live action Speed Racer movie coming out next month and what a better way promote the May 9th premiere than with a movie-inspired contest. Just know your stuff about Speed Racer and be pretty quick at sending a text message and maybe you’ll have a shot. The prize? How about a Speed Racer inspired Mach 5 Corvette? This over-the-top resto-mod was built on a C5 platform complete with the LS1 350 ci 350 hp engine and skinned with a custom C2 Corvette body. What I find really unique about this design is the front and rear chrome C2 bumpers have been integrated into the fiberglass as opposed to just being bolted on like an original 1963-1967 Corvette. We also notice the styling cues from a 1967 Corvette with the stinger hood, rear backup lights and of course the distinctive front quarter panel vents. Despite having the fuel tank door on the drivers side of the Corvette, the rear original (if you want to call it that) fuel filler door remains. The Corvette’s creators put the value of this one-of-kind custom at $100,000.

To enter the contest, you must visit RaceForSpeedRacer.com and enter your cell phone number or you can also enter by texting “fast” to 90736. On April 18th you’ll receive a Speed Racer trivia question and will have 2 minutes to reply with the correct answer. 10 people with the correct answer will be flown to the premiere and will have to race mini cars to determine the winner of the Mach 5 Corvette. Check out the trailer for Speed Racer on YouTube.com
