Barn Find: 1968 L-88 Corvette Convertible Racer

by Keith Cornett on October 1, 2008

1968 L-88 Corvette Convertible

One of the approximately 80 L-88 Corvettes produced in 1968 was recently unearthed in North Florida by the guys at Proteam Corvettes. Unrestored and most definitely molested, this L-88 street racer is unique as only one or two known L-88 Convertibles were produced with a Rally Red exterior and red interior.

This Corvette was a one-owner car since new until September 24, 2008 and features all the goodies you can expect on an L-88 racer: The M22 4-Speed close ratio heavy duty transmission, J56 special heavy duty brakes, F41 heavy duty suspension, a heavy duty rear end and the sure sign of an original street racer: radio delete! The big block that came with this race-bred convertible is a GM warranty engine.

Proteam is considering invitations for displaying the Corvette before it heads into the shop for a complete restoration. Terry believes these original Corvettes in their “as-found” condition can be an invaluable tool for senior judging seminars. Sure it’s not a Survivor® but it is still a really neat find.

2008 Corvette ZHZ For Sale

A Corvette Forum member found this 2008 Corvette ZHZ for sale in eBay. The Velocity yellow Coupe had only 2,000 miles on it before it was damaged and removed from the Hertz fleet. Looking at the car, the damage doesn’t appear to be that bad but in addition to needing a new front bumper, the engine block will need to be replaced. That would probably explain why the car has a California salvage title. The Corvette ZHZ is offered with a “Buy It Now” price of $29,900.

Here is the auction description:

Up for sale is a 2008 Chevy Corvette ZHZ Hertz Limited Edition with only2k original miles. This coupe is fully loaded with options such as: power windows, power locks, power seats, leather, CD player, ABS, chrome wheels, automatic transmission and much more. This Corvette is damaged on the front bumper ( please see pictures for details). In addition the engine block needs to be replaced. This Chevy has a California Salvage Certificate and is sold AS-IS. California Buyer must pay 7.75% sales tax and will receive a Acquisition Bill Of Sale. All buyers who plan to pick up the car in person ( NOT by car hauler) must pay tax. There is a LOW BUY IT NOW PRICE set on this auction so take advantage of owning this 2008 Chevy Corvette ZHZ Hertz Limited Edition at a fraction of the cost!

Rarest Corvette Small Block: The 1970-72 Corvette ZR1

by Keith Cornett on September 23, 2008

The 1970 Corvette ZR1

Obviously we’re big on Corvette ZR1′s here at CorvetteBlogger because the car has pushed the boundaries of performance compared to the regular Corvette. But we also love classic small block Corvettes as well. So with the help of Proteam Corvette’s Terry Michaelis, we thought we’d combine our interests and travel back in time to take a look at the very first Corvette ZR1, the 1970-72 Street Legal Racer.

Although it would be another 20 years before the Corvette ZR1 would earn the title of King of the Hill, its predecessor set the bar high in terms of performance. In 1970 Chevrolet introduced this limited production radio delete car to the racing world. Dubbed the ZR1 based on the name of its RPO package, this successor to the L88 Corvette came equipped with the potent LT1 350 ci 370 hp small block and all the specialty options that were found on the L88s that were retired the previous year.

In addition to the LT1, the ZR1 package included an M22 rockcrusher 4-speed heavy duty transmission, J56 Heavy duty power brakes, transistorized ignition, special aluminum radiator and a suspension that included special springs, shocks and front and rear stabilizer bars.

Production of the ZR1 was limited to 1970-1972, the same three year time span of the LT1 engine. During that three year run, only 53 cars were ordered with RPO ZR1: 25 in 1970, 8 in 1971 and 20 in 1972. The ZR1′s of the 1970′s are the rarest small block Corvette ever produced.

Identification features of the 1970-72 Corvette ZR1 include:

  • LT-1 engine, suffix CTV-1970, CGY-1971, or CKY-1972,
  • J-56 heavy duty brake package with dual pin front brake calipers (power),
  • F-41 heavy duty suspension package, 7 leaf rear spring, heavy duty shock absorbers, heavy duty 5/8 front sway bar and heavy duty rear spindle struts,
  • M-22 (rockcrusher) transmission,
  • large aluminum radiator with expansion tank (no other LT-1 equipped car has an expansion tank),
  • steel fan shroud, other than 1972’s (most),
  • radio delete (no fenders drilled for antenna). The ZR-1 package could not be ordered with any creature comforts, ie: air conditioning, power windows, power steering, radio, alarm system, rear window defroster, or special trim items like P02 wheel covers.

As an investment, the C3 Corvette ZR-1 is poised for growth, especially those from the first year (1970) where horsepower was at its highest mark. For the cost of a 1967 L71 Big Block, you can own a performance Corvette with a production limited to just 25!

This Corvette ZR1 has been marked down from $149,000 to $130,000 as part of Proteam Corvette’s 911 Emergency Sale. But if you’re interested, you better move fast because the sale ends on September 30th.

When Corvettes Go Bad: 1964 Corvette 4×4 AMC

by Keith Cornett on July 30, 2008

1964 Corvette 4x4 AMC

Fate sure dealt a hand to this 1964 Corvette convertible. The car was the unfortunate target of a custom conversion back the 80′s which saw the Sting Ray’s body mated to a Jeep 4×4 chassis. To add insult to injury, the Corvette is now powered by an AMC V8 instead of its trusty Chevy 350. But who are we to judge a car on its minor imperfections. It hasn’t stopped the ebayers as the Corvette has 15 bids with the high bid at $4500. Shows that you can slap a Corvette on just about anything and it will sell.

1964 Corvette 4x4 AMC 1964 Corvette 4x4 AMC 1964 Corvette 4x4 AMC

The Corvette is being sold as a parts car as it has no title. But the seller claims the VIN and trim gags are intact in case you wanted to try. I was somewhat surprised to see a mid-year convertible top. The interior is fairly stock but in pretty rough shape. I don’t ever see this Corvette being returned to former glory.

The eBay auction closes Thursday, July 31st. The $4,500 high bid appears to have surpassed the reserve price.

eBay: Charlton Heston’s 1999 Corvette For Sale

by Keith Cornett on April 15, 2008

Charlton Heston's 1999 Corvette Coupe

I think I’ve mentioned my affinity for guns, whisky and Corvettes in a previous post and although I can’t really claim the “all American guy” trifecta with this story, Meatloaf would say “two out of three ain’t bad”.

Charlton Heston, actor extraordinaire and 2nd Amendment rights champion was also a Corvette owner. His 1999 Black Corvette Coupe is currently listed for sale on eBay as the current owner looks to cash in on the death of the movie icon. The Corvette is a mostly stock automatic with just 18,500 miles. The current owner claims the only changes were new LED halo taillights, C6 style chrome wheels and a Borla Stinger exhaust system. The original factory rims and taillights also come with the car.

Charlton Heston's 1999 Corvette Coupe Charlton Heston's 1999 Corvette Coupe Charlton Heston's 1999 Corvette Coupe

If you’re contemplating the purchase of the Corvette previously owned by Moses himself, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got more documentation than just a pencil with bite marks. Luckily for you, this Corvette comes with the actual registration and insurance card with “Chuck” Heston’s name and Wilshire Blvd address.

The auction runs through April 17th and the current bid of $20,800 has yet to break the reserve. “Cold Dead Hands” jokes aside, with the provenance of celebrity, this Corvette would give bragging rights to any owner.

Mecum Collector Car Auction

Last Saturday evening was the first of six consecutive Mecum collector car auctions that are being broadcast live on the HD Theater channel. Some get the channel, but many of us don’t so we’re relying on Mecum’s website to both inform us of what’s coming up each week as well as what the final results are from the previous week’s auction. Yesterday’s mass email to Mecum’s Infonet subscribers gave us several reasons to smile while at the same time cursing the gods of television programming for being shut out from this weekend’s broadcast. But if you do get HD Theater, tune in this Saturday night, 8pm eastern time to see the following Corvettes:

Lot B34 1963 Corvette Z06/Tanker

1963 Corvette Z06/TankerThis spectacular Sebring Silver split window coupe with Black interior is an original Z06 car, and features the massive 36 gallon fuel tank for endurance racing. The $1,818.45 Z06 Special Performance Equipment option package also includes the 360-horsepower, fuel injected 327 with 11.25:1 compression, 4-speed transmission, 4.11 positraction differential, power brakes with metallic linings, heavy duty stabilizer bars, as well as heavy duty springs and shocks. Other optional equipment includes 6.70 x 15 4-ply, whitewall tires, tinted windshield, power windows and signal seek radio. Only 199 Z06 Corvettes were produced and only 66 had the N03 Option 36 gallon fuel tank. A very rare Corvette indeed.

Lot B37 1961 Corvette Convertible RPO 687

1961 Corvette ConvertibleThis rare and highly documented Corvette features the fuel injected, solid lifter, 315 horsepower 283 V-8, 4-speed transmission and 4.11 positraction. The Corvette is 1 of 233 equipped with RPO 687 – Heavy Duty Brakes and Suspension package. Other optional equipment includes deluxe heater, 2 tops and Wonderbar radio. Finished in Honduras Maroon with a Fawn Beige interior. It was awarded a Bloomington Gold Survivor Certification and an NCRS Top Flight Award in 1994 and was also featured in the Bloomington Gold Special Collection in 1996. Additionally, it has won the Chevy/Vettefest Nationals Gold Spinner Award and the prestigious Corvette Triple Crown Award.

Lot B1 1966 Corvette Coupe L36 427/390

1963 Corvette Z06/TankerThis is the Corvette that will be kicking off the evening. Lot B1 is a Sunfire Yellow Corvette Coupe with Black interior. The Corvette is powered by the L36 427 ci 390 hp V8 engine. It has a 4-speed manual transmission, side exhaust, power brakes and power windows. The Corvette underwent a frame-off restorationa and features just 50,000 original miles. And while this is just a personal preference, I love the factory original hubcaps in liu of knock-offs on this Corvette. A very nice Corvette with fantastic curb appeal.

Mecum’s auctions allow sellers to place a reserve price on their cars so it will be interesting to see how well these vintage Corvettes do. We’ll follow up with the results as soon as their available.

2009 Corvette ZR1

Today is kind of fun because I get to combine two of my favorite subjects into one post. I love looking at Corvettes for sale and its always fun when I can bring something unique to the table. I also will follow just about any news story that revolves around the 2009 Corvette ZR1. So its big news for us to announce that our Corvette classifieds website VetteFinders.com has received its first ad for the 2009 Corvette ZR1.

The 6.2L Supercharged Corvette is being offered by Jim “Z” of Spitzer Chevrolet in Amherst, Ohio. Jim placed the ad earlier this week and the Corvette has already received a ton a page views and requests for additional information. The ZR1 is being offered as a “You Build” model and carries a price tag of $100,000 + market adjustment. That adjustment will cover the actual cost of the Corvette which has yet to be officially released, as well as provide a cushion for the dealer based on demand for the car.

This is only the second such ad we’ve seen for the 2009 Zr1. Last week we reported about the guy trying to finance his purchase by selling two ZR1′s on CraigsList.com for $350,000 each.

Most of the larger dealerships with have an allocation (or two) for the Corvette ZR1. The ordering window for the ZR1 opens on May 29t and its our belief that these Corvettes will sell pretty quickly so you would do best to get your name on a list now. Click here to view Jim’s Corvette ZR1 ad at VetteFinders.com or contact our friends at Kerbeck Chevrolet and ask Dave how to get on the ZR1 waiting list.

2009 Corvette ZR1 Hits CraigsList for $350,000

by Keith Cornett on March 11, 2008

2009 Corvette ZR1

We’ve heard over and over again that the MSRP for the 620 hp 2009 Corvette ZR1 should be around $100,000. We also know that when the first ZR1 hit the open market back in January at Barrett-Jackson, it sold for 10 times that amount. So we can’t blame some guy in LA who placed an ad on the free classifieds website Craiglist to advertise the sale of two 2009 Corvette ZR1′s with a considerable market adjustment price of $350,000 each:

yes i have guaranteed myself to get three but only selling two who wants one ?dont wait till this summer there are only 2000 being made price will go up SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY.

Will demand for the 2000 or so Corvette ZR1s expected to be produced in 2009 live up to the hype and create a secondary market that hasn’t been seen since the introduction of the 1978 Corvette Pace Car 30 years ago? Jay Leno said during his introduction of the ZR1 at Barrett Jackson that he was the president of the “More Money Than Brains” club. Our craigslist seller might just be a member as well…

1954 Corvette

With all the attention the 1953 Corvettes have been getting recently, we thought we’d take a look at what some are calling the best value of the early C1s – the 1954 Corvette.

The rising values of the 1954 Corvette has surprised many as it appears the 2nd year model is finally making its move. Many factors justify the appreciation of the 1954s, none more significant than the fact that the model year is sandwiched between the skyrocketing values of the 1953 Corvette and the V8 Powered 1955 Corvette. In the past, the 1954 Corvette was in many ways considered the stepchild of the early C1 generation, but no more as collectors are beginning to appreciate the Corvette on its own merits.

Production of the 1954 was moved to its own renovated assembly plant in St. Louis and benefited greatly from the lessons learned from the mostly hand assembled 1953 Corvette. GM’s estimated 10,000 units would be produced but only 3,640 constructed. While the sales projection was way off for the time, this production number is over 10 times the number of 1953 Corvettes produced and over 5 times greater than the 1955 Corvette that followed it.

As there were no real drive-train options offered, the 1954 Corvette is one of those rare years where the values are driven almost exclusively by the exterior color. Of the 3,640 1954 Corvettes produced, it’s estimated that the colors were broken down as: 3,230 Polo White, 300 Pennant Blue, 100 Sportsman Red and 4 Black. Therefore with similar cars (condition, documentation, etc) any color other than Polo White will be valued at $10,000-$15,000 more while the ultra-rare Blacks could command three to four times that.

Our Corvette Price Guide documents the rising values of the 1954 Corvette with an average price of $65,000 and a high of $143,000. However most astounding is the appreciation figures. The 1954′s 1 year appreciation is 30% and the 5 year appreciation figure is 85%. Who’s the stepchild now!

In perusing the market in search of examples we found the following:

1954 Polo White Corvette1954 Corvette Convertible, Blue Flame Six, powerglide, numbers match. Polo White paint with Sportsman Red interior and Beige Soft top. Body-off restored over a five year period with the top and interior being done by professional restorer, John Kennedy of Bountiful, Utah. Show condition! Optioned with powerglide, 3.55 rear, Wonderbar radio, e-brake warning light, windshield washers, courtesy lights, heater, hubcaps, and 6.70×15″ wide white tires. Most all factory correct type components including the spare, jack, jack tools, trunk mat, trunk liner, side curtain, side curtain bag, rebound straps, washer system, tar top battery, shifter, shielding, air cleaners, generator, side draft carbs, and #241 head. A very correct spectacular first generation Corvette that was a recent Bloomington Gold feature car. Looks, runs, and drives excellent. Offered by Proteam Corvette. $119,000

1954 Sportsman Red CorvetteFinished in stunning and rare Sportsman Red with correct Red interior. One of only 100 built, this spectacular motorcar was purchased in Southern California from a professor who acquired the car from its original owner, a GM factory engineer. This museum-quality Corvette is one of the very first three red Corvettes ever built by General Motors. It has only been driven 25,000 miles and has recently undergone a cosmetic restoration, including show quality paint, new interior, new tires and new top (original tires and interior are now boxed and goes with the car!). This spectacular motorcar has been examined by many Corvette experts and is believed to be one of the nicest original examples on the market today. It has the correct, numbers matching engine, correct carburetors and many early unique features such as dual hood releases, ultra-short (pre-Duntov) exhaust tips, correct date-coded side curtains with the storage case, original factory spare and so much more. eBay Buy-It-Now Price: $119,900

1954 Polo Blue Corvette2-owner 1954 Chevy Corvette. 1954 was the first year this car was produced in a color other than white. This Pennant Blue sportster will turn heads at every corner. Except for the paint, this baby is all original. The side curtains, the spare tire, the soft top, gauges, Wonder-Bar Radio, hub caps and even the original windshield-washer fluid container – all original!!! The radio works but the speaker needs to be connected. The Blueflame engine is all original and all numbers match. In 1954, 3230 whites were produced. Only 300 Pennant Blues were produced. This is truly one of the rare ones!!! There are some areas that can use some TLC – for example, the carpeting and driver’s seat. The driver’s side curtain is missing a small screw and both curtains need some work on the rubber trim. The car starts on first try and sounds like a dream. The Powerglide Automatic transmission shifts smoothly. eBay Current Bid: $25,655.00
