When he wasn’t busy making rock ‘n’ roll classics like “Welcome to the Jungle,” Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash (Saul Hudson) could sometimes be found behind the wheel of his classic ’66 Corvette Sting Ray.
He eventually wound up selling the vintage C2 Corvette for $108,000 at a rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia auction in 2011.
Now, the same auction house – Julien’s of Beverly Hills – is auctioning the car again as part of its 20th anniversary event called “Played, Worn, & Torn: Rock ‘N’ Roll Iconic Guitars and Memorabilia.”
For its big anniversary event, Julien’s has gathered more than 1,000 historic items owned and used by a lineup of music legends like Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, Eric Clapton, Elvis Presley, Prince, The Beatles, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Janis Joplin, Pete Townshend, Johnny Cash, Albert King, Dolly Parton, Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa, Dee Dee Ramone, Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees, Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, Bono from U2, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, and more.
The auction will be held Thursday, Nov. 16 through Saturday, Nov. 18 live for the first time at the Hard Rock Café Nashville and online at Julien’s Live.
Slash’s former ride contains several customized features he reportedly chose himself, including dark tinted windows for privacy after he allegedly grew tired of being harassed at a stoplight by people in another car giving him “the longhorns” as he later described the gesture. That way, he was able to “finally [stop] paying attention to the people around me.”
The car still wears the shiny black paint applied in 2011 that remains in nice condition, and the leather bucket seats were also redone that same year. The air conditioner was replaced in 2017, and new tires were installed in 2019.
The odometer reads 35,164 miles, though that number can’t be verified. The car is nicely equipped with a 427/390 horsepower big block engine and a four-speed manual transmission, along with side pipes, power steering, power brakes, spinner-less rally wheels, and a ’67 big block hood with a red stinger.
Slash bought the car in 1988, one of his first big purchases during the band’s meteoric rise to stardom, but said at the time of the 2011 auction: “I hated to part with it, but it never gets driven. I’m always on the road.”
This time, the Sting Ray – Lot 43 – is predicted to bring between $100,000 and $200,000.
