It’s not every day you meet the original—and only—owner of a 1967 Corvette. Rarer still when that owner happens to be the 46th President of the United States. But on the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, Joe Biden rolls in behind the wheel of his Goodwood Green Sting Ray convertible, a car he’s cherished for nearly six decades and vows he’ll never part with.
Biden laughs when Jay asks if he still gets to “play” with the Corvette. “A little bit,” he says, “but I still have Secret Service with me, so when I drive, they’ve got to be in the car. They all draw straws for who doesn’t have to get in with me.”
The President’s bond with the car goes back to 1967, when his father—who managed a local dealership—surprised him with the Corvette as a wedding gift. Biden recalls how he and his late wife, Neilia, brought their old cars in to be “fixed up,” only to find the entire dealership staff standing aside as the Sting Ray sat waiting for him. “This is your wedding gift,” his father said.
The sticker price was $5,700, a staggering sum for the young couple. “My dad didn’t have the money to buy this,” Biden says, “but he could make the monthly payments.” That sacrifice cemented the car’s emotional weight. It wasn’t just a machine—it was a family heirloom, a memory on four wheels. And from that moment on, Biden made one thing clear: he would never sell it.
Over the years, life and public service forced the Corvette into long stretches of storage. “Obviously, you put it away for a few years,” Leno says. Biden nods. “I kind of had to put it in my garage.” But even then, he refused to let it go. “I always wanted to keep it,” he says. “I didn’t want to sell it.”
He admits that every so often, frustration would get the better of him. He’d sneak the car out of the garage, rumble down his quarter mile driveway, and “lay a little rubber” just to feel the old V8 come alive again. “Just to get the feel of it,” he says, grinning.
The last time Biden and Leno drove the car together was a decade ago—an outing memorable not only for the Corvette but for the moment Colin Powell pulled up in his newer, more powerful C7. “There’s always some show off in a new Corvette trying to blow your doors off,” Leno joked from the passenger seat.
Now, 10 years later, the two old friends take the Sting Ray out again, this time with Leno at the wheel. The four-speed manual still shifts like a dream. The engine still sounds “healthy,” as Leno puts it. And Biden still looks like a man reunited with a piece of his youth.
For all the miles he’s traveled—by train, by plane, and in motorcades—the President’s heart still belongs to this car. It’s the one machine he’s never considered trading, upgrading, or letting go. “I’ve had it since then,” he says. “All these years.”
And if his smile behind the wheel is any indication, he plans to keep it for all the years still ahead.

At least ol’ Joe seemed happier than I’ve seen in a long time – Corvettes are good for the soul.
Cool video, nice to see the human side of ‘ole Joe after the presidency. Didn’t care for him as Commander in Chief, but didn’t enjoy watching him go downhill in the end.
Check the back compartment for government documents.
I’m with @RC. Also there is a non-zero chance that there is more cocaine, somewhere on the vehicle, than in a DMC-12. And as an heirloom, Hunter will wreck it inside of 10 years. It has much more value as having belonged to Joe and being resold as thus.
Original owner is cool and all, and then you realize it’s because the person came from enough affluence that such a thing is possible. Very, very few of the Corvette community are fortunate enough to have been gifted a new Corvette at or before the age of 25. Let alone being able to keep it as an occasional car, instead of a daily driver (used and abused into the ground).
I’d argue that is extremely atypical. Corvette is the car for the person who has spent a lifetime aspiring to own one–and eventually makes it happen.
I hope Joe continues enjoying the drive. I wish my trips to the grocery store were as enjoyable.
According to IPD Joe acquiring and still owning the car should be seen as a negative because it is so rare.
Along with his other speculative negative comments suggest that he is still guzzling the orange man’s Kool-Aid. What a….
Biden also used to own a Cadillac ATS-V Sedan.
Oh Joe
Really!!??
IPD, it happens. I’m the original owner of a ’76 that I bought new at age 18 with money I made delivering newspapers, pumping gas, working my butt off. I was wise enough to buy my first beater in ’77 & it’s now a trophy winning all-original Vette with 78k on the clock.
