Owning the same car for 54 years is rare.
Owning a chrome bumper, big block, four speed 1971 Corvette for that long?
That borders on legendary.
But that’s exactly the story behind this Brands Hatch Green LS5 Corvette, now for sale on Craigslist in Overland Park, Kansas, after spending nearly its entire life with one caretaker — a 92-year-old gentleman who bought it way back in 1972 and never let it go.
His son is handling the listing, but the pride in the family’s long relationship with the car comes through clearly: “He’s owned the Corvette for 54 years… it’s been very well cared for and mechanically needs nothing.”
The car’s history is as clean as its paint. The original owner kept it for just a year before passing it along, and the second owner — the man now reluctantly letting it go — has been its steward ever since. More than five decades of ownership usually means one thing: deep emotional attachment.
And judging by the condition, that attachment translated into meticulous care.
The Corvette still carries its numbers matching LS5 454/365 hp engine, four-speed manual, and original rear end. The motor was rebuilt at 80,000 miles, and the odometer now shows 145,000 — honest mileage for a car that’s been driven, enjoyed, and maintained rather than hidden away.
One commenter summed up the mileage debate perfectly:
“That’s 145k miles over fifty five years… a little over 2,600 miles a year. For a two owner, all original car that’s been fastidiously maintained, that’s not awful.”
In 2019, the Corvette received a full, high quality repaint in its original Brands Hatch Green, a color that absolutely pops on an early C3. The shine still looks fresh, and the seller says the car has taken home multiple Best in Show trophies over the years.
The wheels and side pipes aren’t factory, but they’re period correct and fit the car’s personality. One reader even joked about the emotional weight of buying a car like this:
“When buying a car like this from a long term owner of 54 years, I get the ‘I’m not worthy’ feeling. I feel like there should be an interview process.”
Another chimed in with the classic spouse vs car dilemma:
“The wife: ‘It’s either me or that car.’ Me: ‘I’ll help you pack.'”
Aside from replacement seat covers and a wheel wrap, the interior is largely untouched. The carpet shows typical fading, and the driver’s door card needs attention, but the overall presentation is remarkably clean for a Corvette with this kind of mileage.
One commenter put it bluntly:
“That is the nicest original Corvette interior I have ever seen with that many miles.”
And yes — the factory A/C blows cold, a detail that always matters on a big block C3, especially if it’s going to a new home in a warm climate.
The LS5 big block remains the star of the show. With 365 horsepower and 465 lb ft of torque, this was serious muscle in 1971 and still commands respect today. The seller says the car “needs nothing” mechanically and is ready to drive immediately.
Some readers debated the $46,500 asking price, but others pointed out the value of a documented, long term owner car:
“I’d rather buy a known car with documentation than an unknown auction car with no history or guarantee.”
It’s hard to find Corvettes like this. A two owner, numbers matching, big block, four speed C3 with half a century of documented care is the kind of thing collectors dream about.
One reader captured the emotional side perfectly:
“If this were my father’s car that I grew up riding in, I would find a way to buy it. To me it would be a family treasure.”
For the seller’s 92-year-old father, letting go after 54 years can’t be easy. But for the next owner, this Corvette is a rolling heirloom, a piece of American muscle history, and a chance to become only the third name on its title since Nixon was in office.
At $46,500, the price may spark debate, but the story behind the car is priceless.
