A week ago, we drove down to Sebring not only to cheer on the Corvettes, but to also catch the preview lap of the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport. Once those Grand Sports went by, we settled down to catch the racing action at one of the greatest racing venues in the world.
The Corvette Corral was where we parked the E-Ray, and the hospitality tent was hopping with probably 300 or so Corvette racing fans in attendance. If you’ve never done one of the bigger IMSA races to support the Corvette team, you owe it to yourselves to get to one at some point on the schedule. The Corral offers great parking, and a place to watch the race when you are not trackside. Plus at Sebring, they fed us breakfast, lunch, and dinner…plus plenty of drinks and snacks during the long race.
Chevrolet had their display set up and from it we were able to see our first real-life example of the Stars & Steel package, and they had the new ZR1X for there as well. Plus, I got a free Chevrolet Racing t-shirt for sharing some info with their marketing department!
As for the Corvette Racing team, it was tough going at the beginning for the Pratt Miller Motorsports GTD-Pro Corvettes as it seemed we didn’t have the same kind of pace that some of the other teams did. There is always a new BoP (Balance of Performance) schedule between the high speed banks of Daytona and ‘da bumps’ of Sebring, and the Corvettes seemed to be faltering in those daylight hours.
But never count out the racing team. With a strategy in place for pit stops and fast execution, the two Corvettes started their climb into the standings. As the sun went down, things started working out in our favor and at the end of 12 hours, the number 4 Corvette Z06 GT3R with drivers Tommy Milner, Nicky Catsburg, and Nico Varrone were able to stand on the podium with a third place class finish. Right behind them was the No 3 Corvette which finished in 4th place and earning valuable points for the IMSA Championships.
In GTD, the No. 13 Corvette of 13 Autosport teammates Matt Bell, Orey Fidani and Lars Kern placed sixth in class and claimed the race’s Bob Akin Award as the highest-finishing GTD entry with a Bronze-rated driver. That’s important because the team that wins the Bob Akin award for the season gets an automatic invite to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They accomplished that feat last year and we’ll see this team running France’s Circuit de la Sarthe in June for the Summer Classic.
The next event for Corvette Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 17 and 18 and that will featured GTP and GTD cars only.
Here’s a video showing a recap of the Corvettes at the 12 Hours of Sebring and then I have some of the pre-race photos I took from the paddock and the Chevrolet display below.
