[VIDEO] New 600-Mile Corvette ZR1 Crashes During Quarter Mile Run

Can we have a moment of silence please…

The Corvette Nation may have just witnessed the first crash of the mighty new C8 Corvette ZR1 this weekend after a track date in Arizona went sideways. Multiple social media posts over the weekend shared photos of a crashed ZR1 showing damage to its front fascia and hood, and now the videos of the accident are popping up all over the place. Luckily, reports say the driver was okay following that hard hit, and the damage does look repairable. Expensive…but repairable.

The crash happened during an event over the weekend at Firebird Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona. Weather conditions were clear but cool with the high temps only reaching 63-degrees on Saturday. Firebird is a prepped tracked, but as one racer said in the comments, “The prep in the left lane sucked. My awd TRX blew the tires off at the launch.” For this race, the C8 Corvette ZR1 was in that left lane and it would run against a Nissan R35 GTR in the right lane.

This was a roll race as you can see, and both cars accelerated jointly up to the starting line and then it was go-time! And this is where things get confusing as to how this happened. Both cars were headed straight down the track with the R35 getting the lead when the ZR1 suddenly breaks traction and turns left striking the wall. The car then did a slow 360-degree turn, thankfully missing the wall with its rear and then coming to a stop.

With the temps only being in the 60s as a high and the possibility that it was even cooler when this crash occurred makes us think the tires weren’t sufficiently warmed. Most ZR1s don’t have the ZTK package due to lack of availability so it’s likely this one was running on the Pilot 4S tires as opposed to the Cup 2Rs that come with ZTK. Also, compounding is the lack of a rear wing on this base-aero ZR1 which may have provided additional downforce for traction had it been equipped with the Carbon Fiber aero package. However, as Brooks from DragTimes showed, removal of the wing does make the car go faster at the dragstrip.

So here are some of those videos for you to make your determinations as to what went wrong for this weekend warrior. The best view comes from a camera mounted on the Nissan GTR in the right lane, and we also have some track-side views to show as well:

Crazy how quick one of the most exciting races can turn into one of the saddest Races in the blink of an eye😔… Hated to see that beautiful C8 ZR1 go into the wall. Luckily the driver was ok

The very first C8 ZR1 that unfortunately just got crashed today!

When you think you are having a bad day!

An finally, this sad photo shows the ZR1 leaving the facility on a flatbed. Nobody wants to see this, and like this poster said, “let’s pour one out for this guy.” Another comment on this post says “Talked to the guy who crashed it. 604 miles on it☹️”

  1. And why it may be a good idea to take sufficient time to get used to a car, including how it responds once it has completed the 500 mile break-in period, before taking it to its extremes.

  2. Hey everybody, here in the Phoenix area for the past few weeks, its been both rainy and cold for our typical warm January. That track at Firebird is always a mess unless there is a NHRA race weekend. So, some of the blame, about 10% goes to track surface prep, which usually is none.
Now, this dude has no possible insurance coverage as the wreck is all over the internet world. So hopefully he can sell it for salvage parts.
Good luck to Mr. ZR1 Dragster.

  3. Hey guys, when you watch all these videos and the 2 photos, it looks as if the front 12 to maybe 18 inches of the driver’s side aluminum frame assembly will be bent inward just enough for the ZR1 to be considered “Totalled” if this guy had racers insurance, when you’re a member of NCCC at a real race event, he might get lucky.
But has anyone wrecked the front of an 8th Gen. Corvette just enough to tweak the frame? So it’ll be about $300,000 of parts for sale very soon, if he Craigslist the remains of this ZR1. Oh well, he can buy a ZR1X now.

  4. He had done many many days at same track with eray htc and was always between 10.4 and 10.8 fully oem. Last week was doing mid 9s with zr1 but imo that’s why awd with over 600hp is only way to go

  5. That’s f***** up! There’s a used car dealer near me that’s selling a used 25 ZR1 with ZTK Performance Track Package for $429,900 that he could replace it with. That one ought to dig in and stick all the way down the track!

  6. I don’t think the writer of this article is a drag racer let alone a Corvette drag racer. “Heating up“ PS4‘s before drag racing is a very little benefit. Drag radios or two slicks yes stock tires no drop the pressure a few pounds might help a bit but one comment by one poster about turning off the attraction entirely, which takes two stupid steps, especially on a under tired car shows a lack of experience.

I’ve been racing my C7 and C806s at our NHRA track in Bradington for the past five years with no modifications but with PS4‘s with less than 4000 miles on them. On the evening run what you run “time trials you will see almost every car on street tires avoid the water box and drive around to stage. Only our “hot car“ lanes which almost always means a drag radio radio, but usually a true slut ever use the water box. It doesn’t work for street tires because they aren’t made with the material that heats up that quick to provide a benefit. To me the disadvantage was no matter how many feet of burnout I might make after the white box there would still be my new traces of water in the treads of the PS4. When you leave the line at high RPM guess where all of that water goes. Right in front of your spinning rear tire.

I had a very similar incident that this car did similar weather and it sounds like similar track prep a few months ago. We all went because of the cool air, but that combine with the cold prep cause of my ZL six to get very close to the wall. I made four runs that night and this was my fourth and I decided for the night it was gonna be my last period. Just remember you’re driving a car with street tires it’s intended or dry wet and “summer“ weather. You can get by on a track with Tires like these, for a while, but don’t ever expect maximum performance at high RPM with these tires on a 670 hp mid car. I’ve been drag racing for 60 years and I’m quite frequently the oldest drag race at the track and I remember the first time I drag raced was with My brand new 65 396 425 hp. Having dragged race my dad‘s Thunderbird one time and watched others. I knew not to burn up those old US Laredo 775 tires too hot off the start. The problem my head is when I shifted in a second at about six grand. I was still in the torque peek for the big black and I went completely over into the other lane. Oddly enough, I was racing another new 396 who obviously had more experience than I unfortunately was about three car links. I had to me when I went over to his lane. Not what you want for the first time going down to track in your Corvette, but I was 17 too, so I was still young dumb and full if cum.

  7. Cold track, cold tires, likely no traction or stability control, and not nearly enough experience with that level of HP. And more enthusiasm than skill.

And GM says 1500 mile break in before any competition use. Forrest Gump was right: stupid is as stupid does.

  8. Theory-

Driver was either a Boomer or a YouTuber.

If the driver was a YouTuber, he would have been publicly ID’d already, so it narrows down the choices.
