Sixty-two years after it debuted, the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray is still making news.
Check out this fabulous 38-minute documentary that tells the story of what has become one of the most iconic American cars ever built – the split-window coupe.
It comes courtesy of a new YouTube video that is part of “Jerry’s Rides,” a documentary series that explores iconic American vehicles, highlighting the design, history, and human connection behind the machines.
Directed by David Panton, this episode features exclusive interviews with Bushwhacker founder and avid auto enthusiast Jerry Logan, his son Sterling Logan, and Peter Brock, one of the men whose pen helped bring legendary designer Bill Mitchell’s vision for the second-generation Corvette roaring to life.
If you can spare a few minutes and you are a Corvette fanatic like us, we guarantee you’ll love the images and the emotions in this exceptional video.
The film – called “Split Window Origins of the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray” – talks with Jerry Logan, whose connection to the legendary Chevy sports car goes back decades to the debut of the split-window coupe and continues to the present day as his own resto-mod Sting Ray is shown with many “surface entertainment” ideas of his own and then he and son Sterling race down the shuttle landing strip in C2 and C8 Corvettes at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Brock, who was just 19 years old when he joined General Motors as a designer, shares some of his sketches made when he was only 20 and quickly caught Mitchell’s eye with his sketch of what would eventually turn into the iconic ’63 Sting Ray.
The video also reveals why GM’s design team had to develop the Sting Ray in secret, how the AMA racing ban nearly killed the Corvette, the story behind the controversial split window, and more.
All in all, it’s a worthwhile way to spend 38 minutes, if you’re into Corvettes. Let us know what you think, and be sure to read the comments from viewers, especially one from @rebemup who tells how he and a friend accidentally destroyed a 1963 Corvette on the first day of its release in Sunnyvale, California.

This is a great video! It really is worth spending 38 minutes of your life to watch. Just getting to geek out on Jerry Logan’s stunning 63 SWC restomod alone was worth the price of admission for me!
Why was there no mention of Larry Shinoda?
Wow—thank you so much for the kind words and for featuring our documentary! We’re incredibly grateful to be highlighted by CorvetteBlogger—it means a lot coming from folks who truly love and understand the legacy of the Sting Ray.
This project was a labor of love for all of us. Getting to work with Peter Brock, film at Kennedy Space Center, and see Jerry’s story come full circle was unforgettable. We hope it sparks memories and conversations for fellow Corvette fans everywhere.
Thanks again for sharing it with your audience!
A beautiful tribute to the 63 Corvette and Peter Brock. If Larry Shinoda was alive he certainly would have been proud of his contribution to the 63
Corvette. Peter Brock has done a phenomenal job in sharing the story of the 63 Corvette and we should all be thankful for not his contribution to the car but the stories he shares .
Peter Brock has always given Bill Mitchell credit for the 63 Corvette. Without Mr. Mitchell’s to make the 63 Corvette it probably would have been
the car we see today.
