The Corvette Engineers showed up at the Nürburgring a few weeks back with their new Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X ready to take down some lap records. After a busy week of tracking the car during the June Industry Pool, their testing was interrupted by Le Mans and the 24H Nürburgring race over the last two weekends. Our spy photographer over there says they have track days reserved for Tuesday and Thursday this week, so hopefully the Corvettes and their drivers will be up for the challenge!
While I believe the main goal is to supplant the 6:52.07 minute lap time by the Mustang GTD which has done two successful runs under 7-minutes in recent months (and the first American car to run a sub-7-minute lap time), the really big record that stands ready to fall could be the overall production car lap record currently held by the Mercedes AMG One with a time of 6:29.09.
Every time I see the AMG One listed somewhere, I can’t help but to think about the nickname that car got from the Corvette Team, as Harlan called it the “AMG One Less” as the ZR1 came in at exactly one horsepower more with 1,064-hp as compared to the 1,063-hp AMG One. Those guys always had a fun way to point out how the Corvettes are always better!
I was thinking the Production Car Lap Record at the Nürburgring couldn’t possibly be in play, but according to Former Ride and Handling Engineer Jim Mero who had hundreds of laps at the famous German track with Corvette, not only does he thinks it’s possible, but he’s even come out with a time of 6:23 for the ZR1.
The two sports cars are very different with the ZR1 and ZR1X having fixed aero while the AMG One offers active aerodynamics. The AMG One rates their aero package at 1488 lbs of downforce compared to the 1200 lbs on the ZR1. Another difference is the design of the two cars as the AMG has an impressive drag coefficient of .29 while the ZR1 comes in at .34. The reality is that the AMG is really a pure race car with a carbon monocoque tub and aluminum front subframe. However, the ZR1 counters that with a faster car with a great chassis and suspension while the Alcon carbon ceramic brakes are the largest ever to be optioned on the Corvette.
The YouTube channel ARC DRIVER takes a really good look at both sports cars and they are thinking the AMG One’s record could be in trouble.

AMG One not omologated for road use in the US.
Just saying…
We know. We hear it every day. Just stop with the rumors and post the facts and news. Everybody has been waiting on no kidding Corvette Ring times since the ZR1…the C7 version.
ABC and Doug, I agree with both of you on all counts. ABC, key word, homologation, and add production car. I thought the Mustang is a track car only, and if so, it is not a true production car, right? Putting the Corvette GT3R on the Ring and saying it qualifies as a production car.
Doug, do you think the long wait is because the Corvette team is trying to make absolutely certain they have a car(s) to put on the Ring that absolutely will break the Mustang’s record?
And oh, by the way, take down the AMG as well?
@Russ Creath
I hope and pray that the Corvette (whichever variant) will smoke the Ring. I am red blooded American Corvette 100%. I’m just tired of the rumors, speculation, and assumptions. Let’s do it already and “put the world on notice” instead of just talking about it. I’m not upset with KC, I just want Chevrolet to put their cards on the table like everyone else does. No more excuses.
@Russ Creath
Just like the Nurburing records have run their course… the ‘no more excuses’ mantra is bound to the same irrelevant fate.
Of the thirty plus names that build fast two seaters…. I’d like to invite to do an in dept research on Nurburing records. Misleading media and fanboys has it that it is this make it or break it crucible of sort that every vendor tackles on a daily basis to outdo the other when in reality many big names like Ferrari, McLaren and Corvette have let go to it a long time ago (Ferrari has not done it for the last 15 years!!; Corvette the same and McLaren: NEVER DONE IT!
I like to invite you to ponder as to the why?

@Russ Creath if you’re referring to the Mustang GTD, it is street legal.
