[POLL] Should the C8 Corvette Z06 Get the 'X' Hybrid Treatment?

Whewww, what a month! In your author’s six years of contributing to this (plastic) fantastic Corvette site, I can’t recall a more intriguing 23-day period (and, amazingly, there’s more to come next week as the ‘Vette Team attempts multiple record runs at the ‘Ring). It feels like we’ve been treated to breaking news on a daily basis as Chevrolet keeps one-upping itself. But with the bombardment of new information, serious questions have been raised, and we’ve been throwing these fresh conundrums at our passionate readership to get a real-time feel for what Corvette Nation is feeling during this exciting time in Crossed Flags history. Before we get to our fourth poll of the month – and record third of the week – we think a recap of recent events is in order, along with the results of the most pressing questions that arose from those events as answered by you, the most dedicated fans of America’s Sports/Super/Hyper Car.

The Recap

On May 30th, the press embargo on the 2025 ZR1 lifted, and after 11 long months, we finally got to see the 1,064-horsepower monster in action. It was absolutely glorious, it’s performance envelope was even more “unthinkable” than expected, and on a personal note, I got to be a part of the media blitz for Road&Track, Hagerty (I’m particularly proud of this one), and of course, here.

2025 Corvette ZR1

We also learned that the ’25 would be the rarest first-year ZR1 model (the C3s don’t count) in history, bringing up poll question one, where a whopping 75% of responders said that despite the massive haul they could get from flipping their hypothetical ZR1, they’d opt to keep the once-in-a-lifetime (or so we thought) Super-Vette.

We were still reeling from the flood of new ZR1 info when, as alluded to above, undisguised factory widebody C8s started showing up at Germany’s Nürburgring, the ultimate automotive proving ground, just before a surprise Corvette reveal was announced with a simple stylized “X.” When we surveyed you again about what the heck “Corvette X” could possibly be, you stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park! Out of six very plausible possibilities, 54% (by far the leading vote-getter) was the correct assumption: “X” is the E-Ray’d ZR1 that we’ve been calling “ZORA” for years (I was in the 7% of folks hoping that we would finally see a production Z06X lightweight track special, but the wait continues!).

2026 Corvette ZR1X

After learning about the 1,250-horse(!) AWD hybrid ZR1X being an upcoming option on top of the original ZR1, we immediately wondered if the new car would boost E-Ray sales by association, and which ZR1 would be the most popular among buyers. After two days of open voting, the more powerful AWD ZR1X has a commanding and somewhat surprising 69-31% lead on the “purist” RWD version.

Down to Business

The existence of a ZR1X and a hybrid LT2-powered E-Ray leaves just one internal combustion Corvette without the option to go hybrid/AWD: the Z06. The original high-performance C8 still holds the title of most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever installed in a production car at 670 raging ponies. Adding the new and improved ZR1X front end to the equation would take total system horsepower to 856 (which, since it’s so easy to become jaded after throwing around the ZR1 and ZR1X’s otherworldly numbers, is 101 more than the previous champion of Corvette power, which was, itself, a 105-horse improvement on the old high water mark), but, perhaps more importantly, would also bring an additional 145 lb-ft of torque to the party. Neck-breaking AWD launch and an obligatory 200-pound weight penalty is also a given in this new breed of “X” or “E” hybrid Corvettes. So, the question everyone is asking is, should Chevy afford Z06 buyers the opportunity to spec their 8,600 RPM dream machines with the ZR1’s new X package?

Yes, They Should

2026 Corvette ZR1X

Usually, we try to present these polls from an impartial point of view, but this one is unique as my boss/editor, Keith “The Founder” Cornett, and I find ourselves on opposite sides of the aisle, so to speak. Therefore, readers will hear his argument from the side of the “yays,” then I’ll counter on behalf of the “nays.” Take it away, Mr. Cornett: “The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a hybrid Z06X. Adding the electrified front axle would fix the LT6’s biggest issue: low-end torque in low gears, which is exactly where the front motor would excel. Sure, it adds some weight, but that’s just how new cars are these days.

No, They Should Not

I can’t argue with anything Keith said, and I’m no proponent of telling others what they can and can’t do with their money or otherwise, for the most part, but I have some significant concerns about the idea of a Z06X. First, from GM’s perspective, an 856-horse Corvette with four corners of traction could represent a real threat to the “regular” RWD ZR1 in metrics like 0-60 and quarter mile that tend to play an outsized role in many performance car purchases. Another blow to the credentials of the barely released ZR1 after being knocked off of its short-term perch atop the Corvette podium by the ZR1X would likely be catastrophic for sales of the twin-turbo terror.

What I’m mostly concerned with, though, is the Corvette fan/purist’s perspective. Adding the X option would go against the ethos that the Z06 model has come to represent since hitting the mainstream in 2001. While “ZR1” roughly translates to “do-it-all technological tour-de-force” in layman’s terms, making it inherently flexible based on the current state-of-the-art, “Z06” is something different. It is meant to be the lightest, the most track-focused, the one with the direct connection to the racing program, but, more than that, it’s the one that trades off of a certain formula and feel – numbers being a happy side-effect – it’s the one that knows “faster” doesn’t necessarily mean “better.” After losing the battle for the manual transmission in the C8 Corvette and witnessing the overwhelming early preference for the ZR1X vs. the pure ZR1 in our last poll, the enthusiast gatekeepers on the Corvette Team need to tread carefully with the Z06. If hybrid AWD versions of both Z cars were to handily outsell their traditional counterparts, the RWD versions could, like the clutch pedal, cease to exist, leaving Corvette fans with a range of domestic midengined Nissan GT-Rs, with very little left to identify them as Corvettes at all. It’s human nature to want the best, so the on-paper stuff sells, but just as Porsche treats the GT3 as sacred, protecting it from changes to the rest of the lineup, much of which would yield more power, the Z06 should be treated as a sovereign entity in the hierarchy of Corvettes.

Deliberation

Alright, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you’ve heard both sides of this debate; now the decision falls to you; choose wisely!

Should the C8 Corvette Z06 get an "X" hybrid AWD option?

  1. What GM should do? Offer an E Ray X. Use the ZR1 X front wheel motors and battery option.

  2. Hmm, it almost seems like it could get a bit conveluted, will there then be a base X and a Grand Sport X too.?
The X cars tech and performance are great and just like engine options in the 1960’s, it’s not only nice to have choices, but a customer can get one that meets their budget and their wants/needs.
The other hand though is how many levels and X models will there be and will it make the “lesser” Vettes/base somewhat undesirable.
Its just that the Z06 rear wheel drive cars of the last 20 years or so have been so good and the C8 Z06 is the ultimate gas only Z06, why mess with them. If someone wants more the ZR1/X, etc. are available.

Just an opinion to add to the conversation 🙂

  3. I have an alternative powertrain idea that I know I’ll draw hell for, but hear me out.

    LT2/LT6 out…

    A resurrected & turbocharged Olds Aurora-based DOHC V-8 (or Blackwing V-8) in…

A fresh update of the base C8 bodywork to distinguish it from the Z06/E-Ray/ZR1…

No frills; coupe only w cloth seats…

…and call it Grand Sport or SS

  4. A Z06X only works if you discontinue the E-Ray and bring back the original idea of the grand sport. Just Z06 body with the LT2 engine with no option for the electric motors

  5. The common sense answer here is that the E Ray already fills this segment. Asking for hybrid power to “fill in” the rpm below 4000 is antithetical to the zeitgeist of a FPC to begin with. Moreover, the peak power will be will be nowhere near 850; the powerbands for the LT6 and hybrid motor vary wildly. The envelope of ideal performance for the LT6 barely even overlaps with the hybrid motor; unlike the LT2 which has considerable overlap.

I understand the sentiment of what some Z06 owners are looking for. But the fact remains that the Z06 is intended to be an event. Loud. Has to be wrung out at all times. Lighter weight. Harsher ride. Asking for hybrid power and AWD is a tacit admission that “you bought the wrong one” in the first place, when you could have just had an E Ray (which those of us who understood the E Ray, have been saying all along).

I also favor keeping the improved hybrid motor exclusive to the ZR1X. It feels like this mild bump in performance is befitting the ZR1X vs the E Ray. Not dissimilar to an AMG Black Series vs a “regular” AMG.

  6. I really could not say, to add “X” to a Z06… I don’t honestly KNOW if the added weight over the front wheels and tires would hinder handling? {or help}
But I am NOT a “Racer” and would not likely EVER actually GO anywhere close to the top Speeds already available. IF there is a Front “E-Motor” with the added weight, I would want it to be useable to around 45 mph and have that higher Power level … I do not “Drag Race” / Street Race ( more than maybe a ‘Bump’ to MAYBE around 125mph TOPS… most of the time it is simply entering the Expressway or passing other traffic.
I don’t ‘need’ The Fastest Car in the World to enjoy some “spirited driving” in the Mountains near The Tail of the Dragon… So a Z06 with an E-Motor in the 175+ HP range, would be Very Appealing to me… but I honestly feel that most buyers will buy “more car than they need” [and perhaps more than they can HANDLE SAFELY] just for the “Bragging rights”, and “Sensible buyers” will overlook a “Grand Sport” level of C8 for the “Highest Level they can get financing for” even if they cannot DRIVE at that level — whether limited by local places to use it, or limited driving skills… my younger Brother bought vin #0035 of the 2021 C8…
And it is VERY PLEASING… I joined him at the NCM delivery, and we drove it home to the Atlanta area by way of “The Dragon’s Tail” and had a GREAT Time. He could afford to now “move up” but has no desire to do so…I have money “Pending”[long story] but I will not be looking for MAX performance as much as ‘comfortable driving and good handling’ … for Me,
“FAST” means QUICK acceleration, more than TOP SPEED…

  7. The E-Ray hasn’t exactly set the world on fire in terms of sales, has it? Then again, if the Z06 has a weakness it’s the relative lack of low end torque and the need to rev the heck out of the LT6 to get strong acceleration. An electric motor would fix that in a heartbeat.

But I’ll be surprised if it comes. It really doesn’t fit the focus of the Z06. There are other options for low-end torque if that’s what a buyer wants.

  8. Maybe a better question… should the E-RAY get the ZO6 treatment? Ceramic Brakes, are already there…and improved suspension and engine added to the rear for more PUSH…
Kind of what “BoostDistrict” and a few others {LMR} are doing by pumping up the V8 in the rear NOW… You NOW the Chevy Engineers are going to do it RIGHT! and maybe even unlock the control modules…
    THAT could be the next “In-Between car”… THAT could be the Grand Sport between the E-Ray and the crazy fast ZR1x… {But use the “Up-Powered New and Improved E-Motor for the “X-Cars”!!}
