Have you heard!? There’s a new Corvette breaking cover tomorrow, and unlike the usual months-long corporate attempt to build excitement, this new variant was a complete surprise dropped in our lap just three days ago with a simple stylized X. It’s all very exciting, but the out-of-left-field nature of the announcement has led to a lot of different hypotheses as to what exactly “Corvette X” might be. Here are all of the theories that we’ve heard so far, in order of likelihood:
- The most likely candidate behind the “Corvette X” mask is the hybrid AWD ZR1 that referring to as “Zora” for years. Even though GM has trademarked the awesome first name of the original Corvette Chief Engineer, it doesn’t look like it is bound for the 1,224 horsepower E-Ray’d ZR1. Instead, we expect it to bow as an option for the ZR1 with either ZR1e or ZR1x badging. As Keith also pointed out, cars have to be officially revealed as production models for their ‘‘Ring times to count, and there are a pair of ZR1s with the tell-tale marks of an electrified front axle in Germany right now, where the team is planning on getting the first published hot laps for a Corvette since 2012.
- As our friends at HorsePower Obsessed theorized, “X” could be a package that adds AWD to any desired C8 Corvette, which makes sense, as BMW, long a benchmark for GM’s top-of-the-line driver’s cars, uses “xDrive” to signify when its models send power to all of their wheels.
- An overarching, lightweight track package for performance cars is also an idea that GM has been kicking around for over a decade. In 2010, a Z06X and Camaro SSx were shown at SEMA with extreme aero, stripped interiors, and unique looks. While they didn’t reach production, the track-ready Camaro ZL1 1LE paid homage to the spirit of these cars with a pair of Xs on its carbon fiber wing. Could this mythical track pack finally come to fruition?
- The long-awaited C8 Corvette Grand Sport. Stingray production has all but come to a halt. Is Chevy preparing to go all-widebody for the second half of the C8’s lifecycle? If so, will we also get our first glimpse at the upcoming Sixth-Generation Small Block V8? It’s unlikely, but this would be a completely thrilling option!
- A Corvette SUV literally called the Corvette X. Back to our BMW example, do you know what the Bavarians call all of their SUVs? They’re all X-somethings: The X5, the X7, etc. It is possible that GM is on the verge of launching a broader “Corvette Brand” of vehicles with a high-riding wagon, but we hope that rumor remains “fake news!”
- Finally, a much less unpleasant but nonetheless strange thought; the X will be an off-road sports car like the Lamborghini Sterrato or 911 Dakar. Ford is apparently following the trend of dune-conquering sports cars with a Mustang Raptor in the near future; why let them hog all of the fun in the sand? Such a ‘Vette could even bridge the gap between the all-time-great Corvette ZR2 and the modern usage of the RPO for rugged, off-road capable trucks.
Time to place your bets, Corvette fans!

“X” means Extra Cost for all ’26 Models.
You forgot one. It could also be the 2nd of 3 concepts for the upcoming C9 Corvette.
Xpensive
Voting reflects much wishful thinking…😒
I still don’t see the case for a Grand Sport. A hybrid package would be great, especially if I can add it to the stingray (without widebody). Best of all would be having a hybrid package on the SR AND a rally-style ride height.
C8 Corvettes are pretty inexpensive compared to the competition in their market segment. Key word: market segment. That’s why they continue to sell so well.
