[STOLEN] 1973 Corvette Was Stolen and Then Recovered Thanks to Social Media

Thieves took an “irreplaceable” Corvette during a break-in at a California warehouse Sunday.

Michael Dodge tells NBC Bay Area News that what “looked like a professional group” to him smashed their way into his bio-tech company office in Benicia, taking whatever they wanted – including a 1973 Corvette he had inherited from his father 31 years ago.

“I remember when I was seven and he ordered the car,” Dodge said. “It’s 51 years old and it only has 64,000 miles so it’s been babied. It’s never been driven in the rain. It’s one of those kinds of cars. It’s just sad.”

The loss of the family heirloom left Dodge feeling “sick.”

“It’s like someone’s been kidnapped because we just treat that car like it’s one of the family,” he explained.

Besides the car, the thieves also rummaged through drawers in the office and even stole Dodge’s sports memorabilia collection that included several signed NFL helmets.

“It looked like a professional group. It wasn’t just a bunch of amateurs that just threw a rock through a window. They removed the glass panels from the front door and came in and they cleared the whole place out,” he said.

As you might expect, however, the loss of his father’s Corvette was the most painful, with Dodge explaining, “I could not replace it even if they gave me $500,000 to go buy a car. That’s not my dad’s car.”

Fortunately, unlike so many other similar stories, this one apparently will have a happy ending. Dodge is slated to pick up his recovered Corvette today after a Colfax man saw social media posts about the theft and explained to cops that he had bought the car for $2,000.
