The 32nd Annual Hot Rod Power Tour is underway and one of the stops for this year’s road tour along historic Route 66 is Joliet, IL. Unfortunately, there has already been some drama reported from the event, and it has nothing to do with drag times or other performance metrics.
As has been the case previously, car thieves are targeting Hot Rod Power Tour participants, and early Tuesday morning, several vehicles were stolen or damaged at area hotels.
Police are saying that three Chevrolet Corvettes and a Camaro were taken from the Holiday Inn property located at 1471 Rock Creek Boulevard. Meanwhile, A Chevrolet SS, a Dodge Challenger, and a Chevrolet Camaro were damaged but not stolen.
A Dodge Charger also suffered damage at a nearby Comfort Inn at 1520 Commerce Lane. Police found broken glass at the scene and believe the incidents are related.
Joliet’s News Radio station WJOL is saying that a total of nine vehicles were stolen from three different hotels in the Joliet area.
As police were investigating the thefts, they learned that one of the stolen Corvettes had been recovered after it was involved in a crash in nearby Dolton, IL. No driver was found at the scene.
A post on Facebook says one of these stolen cars was an Arctic White 2017 Z06. Tammara Frank writes, “My husband’s white 2017 Zo6 Corvette was stolen along with 8 other vehicles from 3 different hotels in Joliet, Illinois earlier this morning!! You may want to all sleep in your cars!!!!”
The annual HOT ROD Power Tour runs from June 8 through June 12. The event features thousands of classic cars, hot rods and muscle cars that are following the historic Route 66 highway on a five-day 8,000-mile road trip from Illinois to Oklahoma.

This isn’t possible. The mayor of Chicago and the Governor of Illinois assured us that crime was being handled, and thefts in particular are way down.
This happens at hotels all over the place anytime there’s some kind of a big event/car show! Everybody needs to chip in to provide armed security!
This is really f***** up!!!!! What is wrong with the people that do this?
This was clearly coordinated and planned by an organized criminal enterprise. Targeting a specific event and stealing nine modern vehicles, all of which are nearly impossible to steal by non-professionals, is not a crime of opportunity by street level hoodlums. Time to get FBI’s RICO organized crime task force involved.
Years ago New Orleans had a big biker event known as the “Steel Pony Express”. Huge turnout. Numerous bikes, trailers and tow vehicles were stolen during this event. NOLA LEO finally determined that it was hotel employees tipping off their “buds” as to the inventory sitting in their parking lots.
This particular event became known as the “STEAL Pony Express”.
Escaped prisoners from the local prison needed wheels to get back to Chitcongo.
Just another reason to avoid the Chicago area.

People must not know that Joliet isn’t Chicago! And Joliet is run by Republicans.
For many years, I thought about driving a classic car on a road trip Coast to Coast when I retired.
Whenever I thought about the car being stolen, I thought that maybe I would just sleep in the car. The carjackings became well known and people being drug out of their car and sometimes injured or killed. I decided that wasn’t a good idea either.
