When Ferrari relented on its dedication to natural aspiration in its lineage of mid-engine super sports cars during the transition from 458 Italia to 488 GTB, it went from 562 to 661 horsepower, but lost something more intangible. It didn’t take long after this switchover for driving enthusiasts around the globe to anoint the 458 as Ferrari’s highwater mark outside of the unobtanium F40s and Enzos of the world.
Interestingly, at the time, you could find the men responsible for developing the C8 Corvette Z06 among those selective enthusiasts. The traditional method of operations when benchmarking a new go-fast machine involves pitching the industry’s latest and greatest at your creation to see where it stands. The Corvette team, instead, chose to work contradictory to this rule by using a its incomparable engine – as a measuring stick because they were after a certain feel instead of just headline-stealing numbers.
Granted, this pursuit yielded plenty of previously-unbelievable numbers, like its record for flat-plane displacement (5.5L when the biggest Ferrari dared go is 4.5) and naturally-aspirated V8 horsepower (670 vs the previous record of 622 by the 6.2L Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series), but those feats were simply byproducts of Tadge Juechter and Co.’s vision of the ultimate modern driver’s car. This past weekend, a little-known automotive YouTube channel called Jubbal & Cars was able to get these two incredible “California Black-Plate” cars together on a snow-lined mountain road to see if Chevrolet was able to meet or even surpass the famed Italian standard-bearer.
Unlike a lot of highly-produced YT clips these days, J&C is able to keep things pretty short and sweet, and after a brief, strangely tire-centric intro, our presenter is off in the Ferrari behind the Z06 lead car. Most of the commentary is that of someone who is genuinely excited to pilot the Hall-of-Fame Prancing Horse, but a few comparative and educational nuggets do make it to the viewer between the generic but authentic proclamations of “woah, this thing sounds great,” or “that thing is amazing!” First among those tidbits is something we’ve mentioned a few times on this site: you can’t trust anything the exotic manufacturers say about the weights of their cars; they are like some unholy cross between politicians and runway models in this way. Ferrari initially claimed a 3,075-pound curb weight for the 458. Owners who have visited a scale almost universally report a reading of around 3,400 lbs. Next, the video does an excellent job of highlighting the minimal approach to a 2010s Ferrari interior, including the excellent adjustable race seats and the more controversial column-mounted shift paddles.
After about ten minutes of 9,000-RPM goodness, it’s the Amplify Orange over two-tone Natural Corvette’s turn in front of the camera. The first thing our readers are going to notice is that the drop-top Z somehow looks a little ‘off.’ You can chalk that up to the car’s missing front Crossed Flags badge and its down-sized aftermarket wheels. Other than those cosmetic changes, from the front, the Z06 looks downright mean next to its softer-edged mentor. From the rear, we can admit that Euro-centric reviewers who are so hard on the ‘Vette’s tail styling are on to something, but we have to remind them, and ourselves, that the American is packing a fully functional trunk back there – which is something a traveling Ferrari owner could only dream about!
If we’re judging purely by the excitement that each car extracted from the presenter, we’d have to call this fight for the Z06, but unfortunately, the video is left open-ended, though we are left with some great impressions of both vehicles. The Z06 was lauded for how much the driver can change its personality with the onboard settings menus. At the same time, it was the car that simultaneously felt heaver and like it needed a track to properly stretch its legs, which could partially boil down to this example’s hardcore Z07 package and more aggressive rubber. The bottom line for us is that, especially in the context of its contemporaries like the McLaren 750S, the Z06 does an outstanding job of transporting its owners to a more unique era of motoring, a time when everything under the sun didn’t need to rely on turbos or electrification. It certainly “feels” like a living relative of the Ferrari that inspired it, and in 2024, that is nothing short of a miracle!

The Z06 is awesome but there’s no denying that the ten year old 458 looks, sounds and runs great. The POV ride along in both cars was fun to watch. It makes me want to get my C7 out of the city and go driving on country roads for a long pleasure drive.
Vette any day of the week, way better mpg and I can get it serviced anywhere. And the Vette is cheaper.
