Known as the Classic Car Capital of the World, Auburn, Indiana was also the birthplace of collector car auctions in the United States. Worldwide Auctioneers continues that tradition for Labor Day weekend with the 54th Annual Auburn Auction and Show held August 29-31 at the Worldwide Auctioneers headquarters at 5634 Opportunity Blvd in Auburn.
The Auburn Auction 2024 features a number of Corvettes consigned to the sale, ranging from a rare 1954 Corvette Bubble Top to a 2021 C8 Corvette. Currently, there are 23 Corvettes offered for the Auburn sale, and we expect a few more to be added in the coming weeks.
For this preview, we are taking a look at several classic Corvettes and then will return to offer our take on the late models and modern day muscle that will be offered. You can view all the Corvette consignments offered during the weekend.
1954 Corvette Bubble Top Roadster
• Lot 510
• VIN: E54S004483
• Selling on Saturday
With the 1954 Corvette now out for its second year and still without a factory hardtop roof, General Motors VP of Styling Harley Earl commissioned the building of 20 plastic canopy tops to test on the cars. While these original examples went to special customers and dealers, other aftermarket companies soon sprang up to create their own plexiglass “Bubble Tops” as they became known. Original versions of the Bubble Tops cost as much as $500 at a time when the starting price of a 1954 Corvette was $2,774. This canopy top is one of the rare factory options built by Model Builders of Chicago, IL.
This 1954 Corvette Bubble Top Roadster is one of 300 examples that was offered in Pennant Blue and it also retains its canvas convertible top. Power is derived from its Blue Flame straight 6-cylinder engine which was rated at 155 hp. The roadster is largely an original example, and its being offered from just the second owner since the car was sold new.
