The owner of this 1972 Corvette convertible in New Jersey says the finish line is within sight, but he’s not sure if he will take the checkered flag himself.
Instead, he’s put his vintage C3 up for sale on eBay, where the high bid has climbed to $9,300, with the auction coming to a halt on Sunday afternoon.
That’s still below the reserve, and well below what a properly finished, frame-off restored car might be worth on the open market.
First things first, this isn’t a numbers-matching trailer queen by any means. The original engine has been replaced, but by a pretty impressively powered built 355 with roller rockers, “nice” cam, 11:1 compression, headers, 850 Holley HEI unit with tach drive, and Be Cool radiator, connected to an M21 four-speed manual transmission.
The listing doesn’t say how the car runs, but based on the work already completed, that shouldn’t be a problem.
While the body was off, the frame was coated with high-gloss paint, and other mechanical work that’s been completed includes all new brake lines, gas lines, calipers, and suspension.
Unfortunately, the owner candidly admits the car’s current white paint looks like it was applied with a roller – “probably not,” he adds, “but just not great paint at all.”
The black canvas top is said to be “newer,” so that should be one less item to worry about.
Inside, the car’s blue interior isn’t terrible, but would definitely look better with repainted or brand new door panels, as well as new seat covers, rear console cover, carpet, and other minor items. All the gauges are functional, according to the seller.
If no one steps up to meet the reserve by the time the auction ends this weekend, the seller says he may just keep his “fun fast toy” and have his body guy finish the paint when he has a chance.
