Wonder if this Corvette driver will even notice that he can’t drive his Torch Red Stingray for the next 30 days?
After all, British Columbia Highway Patrol officials say the 55-year-old Canadian man was apparently so impaired that he didn’t realize a police officer was pursuing him with lights flashing and siren blaring.
The trouble began around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 26 when an officer patrolling Highway 6 in Coldstream, British Columbia, was passed by a red 2025 Corvette Stingray traveling 120 km/h (75 mph) in an 80 km/h (50 mph) zone.
The officer activated his emergency lights and siren, but the Corvette driver apparently had other things on his mind.
As other motorists pulled over to make way for the patrol car, the Corvette driver took advantage of the suddenly open highway and continued speeding.
Even when the speed limit dropped to 50 km/h (31 mph), the Stingray continued traveling at speeds up to 120 km/h (75 mph) — more than twice the posted limit.
The driver finally pulled into a nearby shopping center after apparently realizing that the flashing lights and siren behind him were intended for him.
Things only got worse from there.
The officer administered two roadside alcohol screenings, both of which resulted in a “fail.”
“Police find intoxicated people at all times of the day who are incapable of observing what’s going on around them,” says Sergeant Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “This is a graphic illustration of one reason that impaired driving is so dangerous. It’s potentially fatal, not be to mention embarrassing and costly, and you don’t want to be that guy.”
Police immediately seized the man’s driver’s license and issued a 90-day driving prohibition. His Corvette was ordered impounded for 30 days, and he received a $368 ticket for excessive speeding.
But that’s just the beginning of his financial troubles.
With towing and impound fees, administrative penalties, higher insurance premiums and license reinstatement costs, authorities estimate the incident will cost him at least $2,400.
And for the next 30 days, that beautiful red C8 won’t be going anywhere — at least not with its owner behind the wheel.
