As someone who’s highly interested in the 2024 Corvette E-Ray, we’ve been watching closely those who have received the first allocations for the performance hybrid sports car and what their current status is.

Just as a recap, the first E-Rays were initially slated to start in October, and then we heard December. We initially believed that perhaps GM was being prudent with the pending strike and all, but BGAP was never targeted directly and now the strike has been officially over since November 16th.

When the first allocations went in, those who are planning an R8C delivery received their Target Production Week (TPW) as December 4th. Shane from the Museum says that GM will often use place-holder dates and then they firm up as production starts. Unfortunately, what we’ve seen happen over the past few weeks is that those with a December TPW have slipped to January, and then some of those have now started to slide into early February. Some have begun joking that the T in TPW should stand for Temporary instead of Target, although “Tentative” may still be the most accurate use of the word.

Those whose allocations were accepted and are not doing an R8C delivery are still status 3000. Among that group is the VIN 001 E-Ray purchased by Rick Hendrick which hasn’t been produced yet.

We’ve read some of the speculation online with people fearing the worst about the E-Ray still requiring development time, and I have even questioned my own sanity of wanting to order a car in this kind of environment…where cars are being built and not completed, where cars are being sent to Michigan for unknown updates, where cars are failing basic quality control checks before shipping.

The E-Ray is going to happen, and I am bound and determined for an E-Ray to be in my future, but what we’ve been witnessing at the Corvette Assembly plant is also happening across the board at other GM plants. So much so that Chevrolet cancelled weeks of anticipated DOSP dates (dealer order submission process) for their various models and have consolidated them all into one week for December (December 14th) and then one week in January (January 25th).

The other thing we are hearing which doesn’t affect the E-Ray as much as the Z06 is that visible carbon fiber aero is in extreme short supply. We’ve seen Z06 buyers extremely limited in what they can order and right now we are told there are barely any available Z06s being sold with Z07 due to the shortage of the required carbon fiber aero and ground effects packages. The carbon fiber issue has also affected fulfillment of the Engine Appear Packages and we’ve also seen shortages in some of the interior carbon fiber options as well.

Our hope (and that’s all we got at this point) is that the sliding of E-Ray TPWs into January and February means that GM is committing those initial start-up resources for the E-Ray back to working to complete the cars already built and get them shipped. Believe it or not, there are still owners of 2023s waiting for their cars and they should be given priority over anything else.

For whatever reason, I am reminded of this part of the lyrics as Paul Simon sings his song Slip Slidin’ Away:

God only knows
God makes his plan
The information’s unavailable
To the mortal man
We’re working our jobs
Collect our pay
Believe we’re gliding down the highway
When in fact we’re slip slidin’ away

  1. Chevrolet needs to take some of this time to reflect on how poorly they treat Corvette customers. It seems to have become all about profit and producing and pushing out product that has not been built to a high standard. I enjoy my 2023 Corvette coupe, but am reminded every time I get in it. Seeing misaligned drivers door, rear hatch and dashboard transition to the door panels. I am one of those that believe Corvette should be spun off from Chevrolet and have its own management team that centers on customer service.

  2. I just watched a short video today that was filmed from the interior of an E-Ray during hard acceleration from launch. You could definitely hear the sound of the electric motor and I wasn’t impressed. The E-Ray doesn’t have the tough classic Corvette V8 sound that I like.

  3. All this nonsense while there are new and useful C8s piling up in dealerships and prices are slashed below MSRP. I get letters, phone calls, and emails every day about coming in. Happy with my C7 GS M7. Was in the market not too long ago but the GM bs pushed me to buy a new 2023 Lexus RC. It will keep up with my Corvette.

  4. Why doesn’t gm stop requiring the aero package of the z06in order to get the z07 package? It will unlock production and save $8k on the price!
