As EV Market Cools, GM Will Opt-Out of Advertising in the Super Bowl

A report from Ad Age says that General Motors will be taking a break from its annual commercial buy for the Super Bowl, ending four consecutive years of advertising in the big game.

A GM spokesperson told Ad Age, “We continually evaluate our media strategies to ensure they align with our business priorities.

The shift could be due to a change of leadership in GM’s marketing. They hired Norm de Breve as Chief Marketing Officer after the previous CMO Deborah Wahl departed in March. Wahl had been there for four years and under her leadership did GM return to Super Bowl advertising in 2019.

There has also been a perceptive change in how the automakers are addressing their EV futures, and the Super Bowl was one of the places where GM touted its EVs as being for everyone. The last four years of GM’s Super Bowl commercials featured celebrities like Will Farrell and Mike Myers talking up GM’s EVs. But more recently, GM announced that it would be pushing back on production of its EV truck line-up with the Silverado EV being delayed until late 2025.

Of course one other reason to skip the multi-million dollar advertising buy is that GM is also coming off its recent strike with the United Auto Workers. GM said the Stand Up Strike cost them about $800 million over its course.

CBS is selling the commercials to the Super Bowl this year and 30-second spot is going for $7 million. Commercial inventory for the game is nearly sold out, CBS claims.

We say skip the advertising but bring back giving away a Corvette for the Most Valuable Player award. GM always got a lot of buzz for that, even if the winner didn’t want the car.

  1. GM, FORD, STELLANTIS, PORSCHE, and HONDA have pushed back on the EV market as they realize consumers are not buying this government pushed BS. As a matter of fact, the CEO of PORSCHE said it is a scam.

  2. I think I can hear the CEO’s of various climate change organizations tuning up their corporate jets to go have a discussion/party on how to better push the climate saving EV’s. Newsom will be there to remind everyone that he is running for president.
