[VIDEO] The Corvette ZR1s Leave the Nurburgring Without Running a Timed Hot Lap

The Corvette Engineering team wrapped up their second week of testing the C8 Corvette ZR1 at the Nurburgring last Thursday, and we understand that they have left Germany which officially ends this latest test session on the famous “Green Hell.”

During the final week of testing, we learned that there were some issues with one of the prototype’s tires which disintegrated and nearly caused the car to crash. We also know that the team had left the Nurburgring without running a timed hot lap for either the ZR1 or the Yellow Corvette Z06 that was also being tested.

Our spy photographer at the track is Stefan Baldauf of SB-Medien and he sent us another round of spy photos which you can see below, and he also produced another great video from the ZR1’s second week at the track which you can also view. But perhaps the most interesting info comes directly from Stefan watching the ZR1s and he sent us the following report:

The team has left the Nürburgring, because there was no sign of anybody today in their test center. Looks like they stopped last Thursday and went back home.

Last week started a bit difficult for the boys, because they had a tire issue with one of the ZR1. The tread of the tire had disintegrated at one of the fastest points on the Nordschleife, the end of the Döttinger Höhe which is called “Antoniusbuche”. Every car is there on Vmax and luckily the Corvette only damaged the cooling system, but luckily didn’t crash. Of course the team stopped and checked everything on each tire of each car. But after a while they were all out again for testing and this issue never happened again.

They were testing until Wednesday, because Thursday was full of rain and they didn’t came out. Friday was a trackday where they couldn’t use the Nürburgring. So there was no exclusive booking from them where they’ve tried some laptimes. I tried to get a time, but it was always in traffic or with slow starts or they drove outside of the Caracciola Carousel. It was a pain in the ass to get no time.

They also took out the Yellow Z06 for testing last week. It was driving 3-5 laps each day (Monday until Wednesday). The sound is totally different to the ZR1. I’ve tried different locations on the Nordschleife than the week before, so that we get a better feeling of more corners and straights.

We appreciate Stefan’s trackside updates and he’s been watching the list that manufacturers use to sign up for the timed hot laps, so we are very certain that no hot laps for either the Z06 or ZR1 were attempted.

One other observation that just came to me as I was watching Stefan’s video from the 2nd week of testing is that all four C8 ZR1 prototypes testing at the Nurburgring were Coupes. That’s a departure from the last few visits where we saw a combination of Coupes and Convertibles. So, while they may be testing the Convertible models in the states, it was the coupes with two different wing configurations that were tested in Germany.

Here’s the latest spy photos from the track which were taken in the second week of testing:

  1. With all the effort to get prototypes to Germany, they can’t arrange to get the track to themselves to get a track time? They can test the cars anywhere for durability and ability. But if only this track is important for that time…that should be the point of going there.

  2. Does this really matter, since Ring track times are primarily for bragging rights? I’m assuming that very few future ZR1 owners would have any interests pushing this Vette that fast for that long,or even have the skills to do so (I know I don’t). Heck, most of these new ZR1s will sit in a garage 99.9% of the time with owners maybe taking it out to a local C&C or a nice cruise. As we’ve seen with the Z06 many will be bought to be flipped to those that have more money than sense… Honestly, its hard to get excited about the C8 ZR1 since for most it will be unattainable in production numbers and costs… I believe the new ERay will be more of interests for many…after seeing it on Jay Leno’s YT show I’ve actually shifted away from buying a 24 Z06. Just my 2 cents for what it’s worth.

  3. Trust me…. they have a very good idea what the time could be…. section times, computers and AI…. easy day….

  4. Could the engine pehaps be a 5.5 liter fitted with a crossplane crankshaft and forced induction (turbos)?
