[VIDEO] 1978 Corvette Field Car Parked for 20 Years is Started and Driven 750 Miles

If you love Corvettes like we do, you probably enjoy watching all the YouTube videos you can find.

One of our favorites is the humor-filled Vice Grip Garage, who just bought a 1978 25th anniversary Corvette that has been off the road for about 20 years. Most people think of Silver Anniversary and Pace Cars when they think of 1978 Corvettes, but no sir, this one is a long way from those sedate shades.

But the attention-grabbing five shades of lime green paint and the 750 miles between his new old Corvette in south Florida and his home garage in central Tennessee don’t discourage our hero a bit.

In fact, he starts his latest video with the following disclaimer: “WARNING: I’m an idiot. Do what I do at your own risk. Don’t take my advice unless you’re really super desperate. This isn’t necessarily educational.”

Well, it may not be educational, but it sure does bring a smile to your face. If you happen to have a spare couple of hours to watch this VGG video, we highly recommend it. The 121 minutes actually pass by pretty fast, especially since we had the Falcons-Bucs football game on in the background.

“I’m way down in Florida because I bought this 1978 Corvette sight unseen,” he says by way of introducing this long-neglected car. “This is actually the first time I’ve seen it in person. Of course, it doesn’t run, and it’s been off the road for 20 years or so. So I’m gonna do the right thing and try to fire this puppy up and drive it 750 miles back home!”

After a few days of battling south Florida humidity, ants, and thunderstorms, not to mention the stench of the custom lime green paint and the water-logged interior, he finally does manage to get the car running, rolling, and stopping – well, sort of.

Watch as our dazed mechanic somehow keeps this avocado Corvette up and running long enough to make it back to Tennessee, though it requires every ounce of his intellectual capabilities to do so. For some badly needed night driving, he even resorts to muffler strap and zip-ties at one point to hold up his winking headlight covers after wiring them directly to the alternator.

What his long journey proves to us is that, no matter how far gone a car may look, there’s always a way to get it running and back on the road, and not for just a few feet.

Now, his next decision is whether to proceed further with this car on his YouTube channel, or just give up on it and find another one that will provide a better foundation. What would you recommend?
