Corvettes for Sale: 1975 Corvette Convertible with Ties to Malcolm Konner Chevy

Back in the mid-1970s, sales of convertible Corvettes were in the tank, perhaps due to the increasing popularity of the T-top models.

Chevy finally decided to pull the plug on the Stingray roadsters after the 1975 model year. Knowing this would be his last chance to get such a car, Malcolm Konner ordered a beautiful silver over silver 4-speed manual Corvette convertible for himself.

Now this car is up for sale on craigslist out of the Old Westbury, New York area, with an asking price of $32,500.

Mike Furman, who was a salesman for Konner Chevrolet beginning in the late ’70s and just sold his 6,000th Corvette as a salesman at Criswell Chevrolet, says the car was actually driven in those days by Malcolm’s son, R.J.

The owner of the car now says he still has “every piece” of the original factory paperwork, as well as the original title and every receipt for work from the very beginning (a folder “the size of a telephone book”). That even includes, he adds, a $24,000 invoice from May 2007 from “one of the leading Corvette shops in the world” for work “done to make the car PERFECT,” not paint or body work but “just things like getting the clock to work, any and all of the smallest things.”

With a sticker price of $10,515, this car left the St. Louis factory loaded, with power windows, auxiliary hardtop, rear window defogger, four-season air conditioning, power brakes, tilt-telescopic steering wheel, M21 4-speed manual transmission, GR70 whitewall tires, heavy duty battery, map light, dual horns, AM/FM stereo radio, and factory custom interior.

The current owner describes the car as being in “mint” condition, calling it a “beautiful” Corvette that “runs and drives as well as it looks with 57,000 pampered miles that has an extremely interesting history to it.” He adds that he has driven the car on “many long distance excursions and will continue to do so.”

Tragically, Mr. Konner would eventually pass away in 1983 while on a Chevrolet-sponsored trip to Italy. Three years after his untimely death, Chevy brought back the Corvette convertible and honored him with a special RPO (Regular Production Option) – known as the “Malcolm Konner Special Edition” of which only 50 cars were built. It is the only time a dealer has been so honored.

Malcolm Konner Chevrolet in Paramus, New Jersey was in business from 1961-1996 and was the world’s No. 1 seller of Corvettes for many years. Corvettes were sold from a separate upper level showroom and were serviced by exclusive Corvette technicians. Additionally, the seller says Chevy actually stationed a field engineer at the dealership on a semi-permanent basis.
