One of our resident spy photographers appears to have captured a 2024 Corvette E-Ray Convertible on the street. Two weeks ago, we would have argued that this is most likely an “export Z06 convertible”, but the monochromatic color treatment, corner-mounted exhausts, and the lack of the flat-plane crank engine wail leads us to believe this Corvette is indeed a near-production-spec E-Ray prototype.

Update: After the publication of what I thought was a very well-written and thorough article on how this car was an E-Ray, my hopes were dashed as I was reminded of the tailpipes.

The tailpipes! Of course!

After smacking myself in the head, I pulled up the two most recent Corvette spy shots that were shared in the last week. First up is the widebody camouflaged RHD E-Ray that was captured leaving the Milford Proving Ground. When it passes, we see the Stingray-style LT2 exhaust tips that are more squared off then the Z06-Export exhaust tips which are seen in these photos.

E-Ray LT2-Style Tips Z06 Export Tips

Of course the E-Ray would have the same tips as the Stingray because they share the LT2 V8 and the same Tenneco exhaust system. Are the outflow pipes to the Z06 Exhaust tips wider to accommodate the LT6? I feel like that’s the case but can’t put my hands on those specs. We read elsewhere that the Z06 export tips are also the same tips on the Cadillac Escalade V. Sometimes we see what we want to see, but after careful review, I am now thinking it’s not an E-Ray.

However, we do question the vertical condenser placed in front of the driver-side radiator and what that might be used for. My original notes are below, but yeah, not an E-Ray…

This Corvette E-Ray prototype was captured outside the Milford Proving Ground and its specs currently don’t match anything on the 2023 Corvette Z06 Configurator even though we just got the news that the EFY Body-Color trim is coming for the Z06. Instead, this has the same exhaust setup as the 6.2-liter Stingray and the body-color trim as seen on the E-Ray visualizer leak two weeks ago. There is also no Captured Test Fleet (CTF) sticker on the car, which most likely means that it’s a future model year prototype as we see the familiar EX-VIN sticker instead.

The “traditional’ carbon flash metallic black trim has been covered in the prototype’s Hypersonic Gray body color. The monochromatic color treatment starts at the front with the front grill and intake trim, on the side of the car with the side intake spear, and the two rear extractor vents. The E-Ray was optioned with the Black Nacelles and Roof, but the only standard external body panel on the E-Ray that remains carbon flash metallic is the lower rear valance surrounding the exhaust ports.

The spy photos give us a great look at the front air dam elements and we see that angular trim that surrounds the air scoops in the center of the grille before rising up towards the upper part of the fascia has black-painted tips which give the appearance that it’s floating. On the lower front driver’s side, it looks like one of the finned radiators is turned 90 degrees from the one next to it. We also note that there is a center radiator that was placed there for the enhanced cooling of the LT6, so are hoping that it will remain on the LT2-powered E-Ray as well.

The pics also give us a great look at the tread pattern of the Michelin tires as the car is turning into the Milford Proving Ground, and we believe those are the Pilot Sport A/S 4 all-season tires. When we zoom in on the rear brakes, we see cross-drilled rotors and the calipers say “Brembo Carbon Ceramic.” The visualizer leak told us about the ZER Performance Package and we know that the visible carbon fiber wheels will also be available for the E-Ray, so seeing the carbon ceramic Brembos is no surprise here.

With the E-Ray going on sale in the Summer of 2023, it would make perfect sense that GM engineers and perhaps even its third-party engineering contractors have been driving the E-Ray on the streets for some time, as similar spec’d cars have been seen as far back as May. Enjoy these pics of the first-ever Corvette performance hybrid under the true light of day, and if you see anything interesting that we might have missed, let us know in the comments!

  1. Great spy photos of the E-Ray. Perhaps it would be a good time to install a new Third Shift of UAW folks at the Assembly Plant in Bowling Green to start building more Stingrays, more Z06s, and now these upcoming Corvette Super Sports Cars.

Chevrolet needs to find better and more reliable parts suppliers that can deliver in new quantities to meet demand, Bowling Green needs to bring in retired UAW guys to teach new vocational classes for the Assembly Plant employees of the near future and please invent a better system for ordering, purchasing and delivery of all new Corvettes, without a years wait after you select the dream version of your Corvette.

If everybody in North America, China, Europe and the World wants a new Hybrid Corvette – or a new Z06 Corvette – or even an old 4 model year Stingray – then General Motors needs to create maximum production at Bowling Green right now or move Corvette assembly to Detroit.

Are you listening Ms. Barra or Mr. Ruess??

  2. Keith, I’m the odd ball in the bunch, my Z06 will be a daily driver this the summer tires are a bad choice. I should drive on them from Oct 1 to May 1, based on Temp restrictions. So with the quote ” The pics also give us a great look at the tread pattern of the Michelin tires as the car is turning into the Milford Proving Ground, and we believe those are the Pilot Sport A/S 4 all-season tires.” my ears stood up. If this is a Z06 and not a E-Ray where did the A/S tires come from? I can’t find the at Tire Rack.
