Some owners of 2022 and 2023 model-year Corvettes have noticed an issue with their headlamps being turned on automatically during the day when the headlamp switch is set to the AUTO position. Chevy says this is due to incorrect programming in the Body Control Module, and there is a software update available for some of those owners.

In a new GM Techlink Article, the headlamp issue actually spans several GM models, including the 2022 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade, and 2022-23 Corvettes. The Body Control Module (BCM) reads data from the ambient light sensor and determines if lighting conditions outside require the headlights to be on instead of just the Daytime Running Lights. Drivers of affected vehicles may notice their headlamp indicators on the dash illuminated during the day.

The GM Techlink article states that an over-the-air (OTA) software update is available to reprogram the BCM for 2022 model-year vehicles to address the lighting operation. So far, there is not yet a software update for the 2023 model year Corvettes exhibiting the same problem. GM offers this advice for 2023 owners until a patch is ready:

For these vehicles, it is recommended to check the headlamp switch setting and for an illuminated Lights On Reminder symbol on the instrument cluster to ensure the headlamps are on when driving in low lighting conditions.

Here is the GM Techlink Article:

Incorrect Headlamp and DRL Operation Condition
September 27, 2022

The headlamps may be turning on automatically during daylight conditions instead of the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) on some 2022 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade and 2022-2023 Corvette models. (Fig. 6) DTC B108E (Ambient Light Sensor Signal) also may be set.

The ambient light sensor is used to monitor outside lighting conditions. The Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the ambient light sensor signal circuit to determine if outside lighting conditions are correct for either Daytime Running Lamps or automatic lamp control when the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position.

If the headlamps and DRL concern is present, do not replace the ambient light sensor or any other parts. Updated software is available to reprogram the BCM for 2022 model year vehicles to address the lighting operation.

The updated software also may be available as part of an Over-the-Air (OTA) programming event. Customers should be advised to watch for any updates on the infotainment system.

For 2023 model year Corvettes with the headlamp operation condition, updated software may not be available yet. For these vehicles, it is recommended to check the headlamp switch setting and for an illuminated Lights On Reminder symbol on the instrument cluster to ensure the headlamps are on when driving in low lighting conditions.

  1. Well this explains why my headlight light is always on my 2023. Hopefully they will have a software fix by next spring when I take her in for the 1st oil change!

  2. I received my 2023 convertible Corvette in September and have not had this issue. I’m sorry to hear that it is an issue with some 2023 corvettes.
