[VIDEO] Is the C4 or C5 Corvette a Good First Car?

The C4 and C5 Corvette generations once represented the pinnacle of performance at General Motors but today these cars can be purchased for a fraction of their original prices. Our friend Brad Hansen over on the Retro Cars Forever channel on YouTube is working overtime on making the C4 Corvette more popular and his latest video expands into the C5 generation by asking if the C4 or C5 Corvette makes a good first car.

Brad dives right into the subject and addresses the various aspects and options of each car from the perspective of a first-time owner. We believe the C4/C5 generations represent a great value for the first-time Corvette buyer and the fun factor on these older Corvettes is still very high.

Here is Retro Cars Forever on the C4/C5 Corvettes:

  1. Not a c-4. I’ve had several and go for the C-5. It’s so straight forward as far as taking care of it that it’s much easier to live with. I’ve owned 39 different Corvette’s over the past 55 years so I know a bit about how it is to live with the different seriess.

  2. I would not want a C4. The C5 may only be one generation newer but is leaps and bounds better.

  3. It goes without saying that every generation of Corvette was better than its predecessor, at least design-wise. But the Corvette is such an iconic car that there is a massive support network available for all generations, with solutions readily vetted and available for all problems typical to each. However, any older car requires available repair funds to be on hand if the intent is to drive it daily. So the choice between C4 or C5 really comes down more to personal preference and to some extent, purchase budget, as C4s tend to be less expensive right now. But whether either is a good first car, really depends on use case over all other factors.

  4. If you want to get into the Corvette Hobby, the C5 gives you the most “Bang for the Buck”. They are not as technical as the newer Corvettes and have less problems than the older Corvette. I know of a few younger family guys who were looking into getting into Corvettes and bought C5’s. They are a great starting point………..

  5. Don’t buy a C4. I was stupid enough to own five of them. If you buy one you can look forward to paying for a lot of expensive repairs even though the car isn’t worth much money. Also GM has discontinued a lot of C4 parts so you’ll have to settle for aftermarket or remanufactured parts.

  6. Young kids really should not have a Vette of any year for a first car. Always exceptions, some kids are very responsible I know at least one lol. C4s are much cheaper then a C5 but yes not quite as nice. Instead of a POS Mustang or Jap crap (Mazda) C4s are not expensive, good for entry level drivers. C5 was the start of perfecting the Vette experience and changed it to a world class sports car. My first Vette was a C3 1981, if you could find a nice one they are not as powerful as the newer one’s but it’s still a Vette and are fun to drive, plus the fact as you upgrade to C4 or C5 you appreciate each generations improvements. Each Gen gets better and better. The trick is to find a nice one that’s been well cared for. The C4 I had was a great car but yes like I said they just get better with every new Gen. I kinda miss my low mile Torch Red C5, but now on my second C6 which is a pristine low mile Grand Sport 3LT manual crystal Red and I love that car.
