Corvettes for Sale: 1965 Corvette Convertible Has a Little Bit Of Everything

If you grew up in the 1970s like me, you probably saw a lot of C2 Corvettes with custom paint jobs, at least in the magazines.

Who knows, maybe we saw this 1965 Sting Ray convertible that had been stored in a shed for the past 20 years before recently resurfacing for an eBay auction.

So far, a dozen “Hippy Dippy Weathermen” have placed bids on the car, with the highest offer reaching an impressive $30,099 with two days left in the auction.

A new owner will have plenty of work left to do, especially since the car still isn’t running yet. The seller does point out that the engine is complete except for a carburetor and air cleaner, so maybe it wouldn’t take much effort to get it running again.

Body-wise, you may have thought we had incorrectly labeled the year of this Sting Ray when you spotted those side vents, but actually, a front clip with 1967-style side louvers has just been substituted. On the bright side, a buyer won’t have to worry about those pesky vacuum leaks that sometimes prevent the hidden headlights from rotating into place, but we’re not too sure about the look of those visible round headlights and rectangular fog lamps that have been mounted in the mouth of this Shark to provide forward vision, are you? We realize this is a custom hot rod, but we still miss the stock chrome bumpers that have been removed, too. The rest of the body, meanwhile, appears to be in decent condition, though that now-faded custom paint job will need to be recoated – perhaps in another ’70s-style inspiration, if you’re still into that sort of thing. Believe it or not, we kinda like the retro look, faded and scratched up though it be. Makes us want to go home and watch “Welcome Back, Kotter.”

Underneath that body, the frame is described as being in “good” condition, with “just surface rust,” and the stock suspension is still there. Depending on the direction a new owner decides to take, the interior might get by with just some new carpet and a deep cleaning throughout, especially the instrument panel and those custom seats with a whole lot of buttons. The seller hooked a battery charger to the cables, and the lights and turn signals worked and the radio made noise.

We always liked the look of the hardtops on these C2 convertibles, and this one comes with what looks to be a decent example. No word, however, on the existence or condition of the soft top under the cover.

1965 Corvettes have a lot of positive traits, including the introduction of four-wheel disc brakes, and putting one of the then-record-setting 23,564 Sting Rays sold that year, back on the road is definitely worth the effort, at least in our book.

As the seller concludes, “this is a project that could be a really cool car if you want a Corvette to make your own.” So, what direction would you take with this car?
