Johnny Cash may have put his legendary one-of-a-kind car together “one piece at a time,” adding whatever parts he could sneak out of the factory over the years.

But the builder of this unique 1989 Corvette took his creation much more seriously.

“I didn’t just choose random parts,” Scifieartist 909 explains on a recent Reddit post where he had unveiled his cyberpunk-inspired car. “I drew dozens of sketches first. And found a design I liked. Then I looked around on the internet for cars that I could use to build the car I drew. I downloaded ripped models from Forza Motorsport 4 of the cars I wanted. And then assembled the whole thing in blender CAD first. To find out if the parts would fit. And then only after I was sure they would did I go and buy all the pieces off of eBay.”

After eight years of work, he finally ended up with this ’89 Corvette that definitely will be the only one of its kind at the next car show. Since he just finished the project last November, however, it’s never actually been to a car show yet.

The parts list includes a front bumper from a BMW i8 turned upside down, a front splitter that is the original C4 bumper cut in half and mounted upside down, headlights off a Hyundai Kona, and hood and fenders from an AR-bodies Camaro stock car. The lower vents are from a Fiat X1/9, rear glass from a Trans Am, seats and fog lights from a Polaris Slingshot, and fuel cap from a Dodge Challenger. He used rear quarter panels that are a carbon casting off a C3 Corvette rear clip, side mirrors from an Arma RC car chassis, and taillights made from Nanoleaf light panels.

Believe it or not, the finished product is considered “just a normal 89 Corvette” by the DMV and the insurance company, according to the builder who says “I’m not telling them anything different,” noting that it “does technically meet all the legal requirements for a car its age.”

You may be wondering what it’s like to drive this “used-to-be-Corvette,” and we’re told that it “drives about the same” as a stock Corvette. He even jokes that the interior rattles around “just as much” and he’s pleased that “so far nothing’s falling off so that’s a plus.”

In case you’re wondering, yes, the builder did go “very briefly” to college for vehicle body design, and he encourages others that he may have inspired along the way to give it a shot at creating their own car, too.

“Totally, give it a go,” he encourages. “It’s a lot of fun. If you want to make it easier you can find 3D models of almost any car online. It’s not too hard to learn how to mix and match body parts that way, or in Photoshop.”

By the way, this isn’t his daily driver. Scifieartist 909 calls his creation “more design project than anything else,” adding that he has “another normal car” that he drives most days. Bet it’s not nearly as eye-catching, though!

  2. Use blend points rather than gaping holes and add some color………I think it could look pretty cool!

  3. I can totally see this being the hero car in a post apocalyptic 80’s film. Props to the creator for his dedication to making something with his time.
