As winter weather settles over much of the country, many Corvettes are settling into a long winter’s nap – waiting patiently for driving weather to return! But there are several important maintenance steps you should take before you store a Corvette – even if it’s just for a few months. Zip Corvette has everything you need to protect your investment in the off-season.

Ideally, your Corvette should be stored in an insulated building with a concrete floor, but sometimes, that’s just not possible. In colder climates, the fluctuation of temperatures in an unheated garage can cause moisture – and moisture causes problems. One of the best ways to combat moisture damage is with a quality Corvette Car Cover from Zip. Never use a plastic, rubber, canvas or waterproof car cover because they all trap moisture. Zip has a wide inventory of car covers available for your specific needs – indoor, outdoor or stormproof, in a variety of designs including two-tone or luxurious silk.

Another common issue during storage is a drained battery. Zip’s Battery Butler® Storage Charger keeps your battery fully charged without overcharging. Its on-board microprocessor regulates the output amperage of the charger based on your battery’s demands. Once your battery has been fully charged, it will automatically shut-off; then resume charging as your battery level drops again. It is specifically designed for long term use. You can safely leave it connected to your battery for days, weeks, months….even years!

You’ll also want to pay attention to your Corvette’s weatherstrip before storage. Coat all weatherstrip with conditioner to help reject moisture and keep the weatherstrip soft. If your weatherstripping is already dry or cracked, the winter months are the perfect time to replace it. Zip Corvette’s 1956-1982 Corvette Deluxe Body Weatherstrip Kits are the finest available – providing a fit and finish on your C1-C3 Corvette that is second to none. Deluxe weatherstrip kits include the primary weatherstrips along with several pieces that are typically replaced at the same time, plus hardware necessary for installation. Zip also stocks a full inventory of single weatherstrip pieces and smaller kits for 1953-2004 Corvettes.

  1. Corvettes aren’t meant to be put on ice for the winter. Like the wonderful body the Lord gave us they need to be valued but driven! The second owner might want to thank you for the low mileage and the depreciation hit but you should us it or loose it! The second owner will love you until he has to do belts, hoses, or the rear Main. But hanging a Corvette in the Garage is not an act kindness to it or you’r self. Drive it, trade it for another Corvette and live your life, because it is so short. You won’t cry when the new Corvette roles in and the old goes away! Good of ye old friend!

  2. Unless you bought a brand new Corvette over 45 years ago at age 18 and end up keeping it for the rest of your life like I have. Mine’s a 77k all original paint time capsule that’s never been driven in the winter. Or even the rain since ’85. C3 frame rot? Mine looks like it just left St. Louis. Keeping it as close to factory in my mind is an act of kindness, especially at this point. Life is short. But the way I enjoy driving my Corvette the best is on a sunny summer day with the windows down and the tops off…:)
