Corvettes on Craigslist: 1971 Corvette LT-1 Coupe

There’s nothing better to do while quarantined than surf the interwebs looking at Corvettes. Here’s an interesting one we stumbled across on the San Antonio Craigslist. This numbers matching Mille Miglia Red on black 1971 LT-1 coupe could be yours for the $20,000 asking price.

Chevrolet built 21,801 Corvettes in 1971. Of those, 1,949 of them got the hot solid-lifter LT-1 between the front fenders. That’s the highest production volume of the LT-1’s 3-year run. The engine was detuned slightly from 1970 but still put out 330 horsepower. The following year official output changed to 255 thanks to a new SAE horsepower rating procedure. The A25 on the trim tag indicates this LT-1 was built in August of 1970.

According to the seller, this LT-1 received a $24,000 restoration. The freshening included new paint, interior, exhaust, gauges, and “too much to list”. The ad also notes that the car comes with the all-important tank sticker documenting its true LT-1 lineage. Judging by the photos we’re guessing this resto was performed quite some time ago as the car appears to badly need a bath. The ad goes on to mention that the car “runs and looks great”. Under the hood we see many correct LT-1 items, but also note that the ignition shields and AIR system is missing. We also see that the PCV system has been capped off for some reason. We do appreciate the owner’s transparency as the ad notes that the car currently has electrical issues with the gauges and the wipers.

It’s the price tag that makes this C3 interesting. $20k is base motor money for a LT-1 car. We all know LT-1 can bring much more money than this one. Depending upon the true condition of this car based on a deeper inspection, that $20k could be a bit of a deal, especially since the seller is willing to throw in $5,000-$6,000 in parts for an additional $4,000. If it cleans up well, and the noted gremlins are relatively cheap to fix, this might be a chance at a quick flip. All that said, $20k could be a fair price for this Corvette.

As always, we highly recommend doing your homework before throwing down a wad of cash on an old Corvette. For more details on this C3, head on over to the San Antonio Craigslist and take a look for yourself.

  1. $24,000 restoration??? Did that occur in 1995? Seems like a pretty sketchy listing to me. Who lists a preeminent collector model on Craigslist, anyway? Craigslist is where the neighbor kid advertises his 2002 Altima before moving off to college. Even project LT1 cars go on Hemmings, Bring a Trailer, or even AutoTrader Classics. Any car of this pedigree advertised on Craigslist must be viewed through a lens of great skepticism.
