[VIDEO] White 2019 Corvette ZR1 Testing on the Nurburgring

I’ve been monitoring YouTube and hitting up the car spotter links like a hawk the last few days after word came out that the 2019 Corvette ZR1 was at the Nurburgring and a high-speed timed was believed to be coming soon.

Then we had the news from BridgetoGantry.com that car spotters unofficially timed a Porsche 991.2 GT3RS with three fast laps all under 7 minutes and the fastest being 6m56s. Meanwhile, a Corvette ZR1 “disappoints” with a time of 7 minutes and 12 seconds.

I’m not buying it.

Everywhere we’ve seen the ZR1 on a track, it has recorded faster lap times than the Z06. It’s the fastest Corvette around the Milford Proving Grounds as GM engineers can now discuss. Mero took the lap record at VIR away from the Ford GT a week after they beat the Viper ACR time there, and then yesterday Randy Pobst took the track record at Road Atlanta, improving on the C7 Z06 time by nearly four seconds.

Although we don’t have an official time for the Corvette Z06 from GM (they do internally though), German magazine Sport Auto recorded a timed lap of 7:13.19. I for one believe the track-purpose ZR1 is capable of so much more, especially with our own drivers behind the wheel.

So with the Corvette ZR1 unofficial time at 7m12s, I got to think that the team wasn’t trying to set the record during the testing session where it’s “disappointing” time was recorded. And so in my hunt for more information, I came across this youtube video from Automotive Mike who was filming the Porsche and also captures the ZR1 on the track.

As you will see from the video, it’s a manufacturer pool day so there is a wide variety of cars being tested by manufacturers during the session that the Corvette ZR1 was supposedly timed. From the previous Nurburgring videos showing an official run by Chevrolet, we always see a closed track or at least one that is clear of all other vehicles. Obviously, that wasn’t the case as the video shows.

To see the Corvette ZR1, start the video at 3:20, but if you start from the beginning, you will see a very busy track day with plenty of other vehicles testing:

I think Corvette ZR1 owners and crossed-flag enthusiasts should be very excited about a potential 6:59 run at the Nurburgring. That is the goal and it was what the car was made for. Instead of thinking about this negatively, we’d like to think the ZR1 ran a 7m12s at the Nurburgring without really trying…
