[VIDEO] C5 Corvette Z06 Carjacked and Shot at by Police as Thieves Try to Escape

Here’s a scary way to “lose” your Corvette, but it could have been much, much worse for the owner.

Rob Helton says his blue C5 Corvette Z06 was carjacked at gunpoint about 3:40 p.m. Friday after he left a subdivision in Edgewood, N.M.

“This kid throws a weapon in my face and says, ‘Get out of the car!'” Helton said.

Helton noticed two other men with weapons, too, and wisely handed over the keys to his Chevy, thinking they’d leave him alone then.

But no, then came the scary part – and the lucky part for Helton.

“I heard the gun go off and it misfired. Yes, that’s a scary feeling,” Helton said.

He called police to tell them about the carjacking. Hours later, the Corvette was spotted on State Road 6 by a Los Lunas officer who tried to stop the two men in the vehicle, Dakota Cook, 24, and Sheliky Sanchez, 28, both of Albuquerque.

Police say Cook drove over several curbs and hit other cars as he tried to flee in the Corvette. When lawmen attempted to arrest the two men on Main Street in Los Lunas, Cook allegedly drove toward the officers, who returned fire at the car.

One witness named Serg Abeyta said he couldn’t believe what he saw.

“(Cook) was relentless,” he said. “He did everything he could to try and get out of that jam.”

Cook and Sanchez still didn’t give up and fled on I-25 toward Albuquerque, where they finally stopped at mile marker 207 and ran from the car. Police say Cook then fired a handgun, and they returned fire, with Cook being hit by the officers and suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Cook’s charges include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle. Sanchez faces charges of resisting arrest and gun charges and was also wanted on felony warrants.

Three Los Lunas officers were put on paid leave until the shooting is investigated. The department says it will release their names when the probe is completed by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.

As for Helton, he still doesn’t have his Corvette, which we assume will have to be processed by police for evidence before he can get it back.
