[VIDEO] C5 Corvette Z06 Gets a Magna Cartoon-Style Repaint in the Backyard

A few years ago my wife got the idea to repaint her 1993 Maxima but instead of taking it to a paint shop, she watched a video on YouTube and did it herself in the driveway using a bright silver Rustoleum paint that was then applied to the car with a paint roller. It looked okay at about 20 feet away, but up close…not so much.

The same concept applies here except for the roller, and the execution is so much better.

The exterior on this Millennium Yellow C5 Corvette Z06 was already looking a little rough, but instead of paying for a traditional repaint, it was turned over to a backyard painter who used cans of spray paints to create a Japanese Magna-style cartoon effect on it.

The video features no dialogue, just the sound of “psst, psst” as the various colors are applied. The black marks were applied with a paint pen and then the car was clear coated to protect the new finish.

The end result ends up pretty cool in our opinion, and I like how the effect kind of tricks your eyes into what you’re actually seeing.

  1. Manga*** books are Japanese comic books and graphic novels read from right to left.

You put magna. Not the same.

  2. I cringed watching some of this unbelievable stupidity. This is nothing but a lesson on how to ruin a Corvette.

  3. What a sad fate for a Z06. Good job at changing the neglected sunburned finish to all out leprosy. What Corvette owner doesn’t want his panel gaps to look gigantic?! Part of the painter’s description was indeed “cartoon”.

  4. Not my style, but I like it. C5 was always way too plain. Surprised they didn’t rip off the BSM while they were at it.

The sin here is that the Corvette community is very blue-blood, and they do not take kindly to those who “…sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.” Wait 10 years, and there will be an entirely new crop of group-thinkers irate about the exact same thing.
