We can all take a trip down Memory Lane with “car guy” Jay Leno of The Tonight Show and Ed Welburn, vice president of design for General Motors, during an episode of Jay Leno’s Garage.
With Corvettes definitely in the news these days because of the impending unveiling of the C7, GM decided to throw a little fuel on the fire and send four of their most important cars in the General Motors Heritage Center collection to Leno’s garage for The Tonight Show host to drool over.

We told you earlier this year about a special 1958 Corvette that will soon be serving a special purpose. Now we know more details.
General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson had announced in February that he was going to auction off his personal ’58 to help Habitat for Humanity Detroit and its efforts to rebuild the Morningside Commons neighborhood near GM’s Renaissance Center world headquarters in downtown Detroit.
If you were at the Woodward Dream Cruise over the weekend, you may have seen the 1958 Regal Turquoise Corvette that’s going on the auction block soon to help breathe new life into Detroit.
General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson had his 1958 Corvette on display at the Dream Cruise after earlier announcing that he’ll donate proceeds from the sale to Habitat for Humanity Detroit, which is trying to bring the Morningside Commons neighborhood on the city’s lower east side back to life.

West Coast Customs kicked off season two of their show on the new Velocity network with a project built around a custom 1958 Corvette for the Black Eye Peas’ Will.I.Am. If you missed it, you’re not alone, but the good news is that after consulting my TV guide, it looks like the final episode of this project will be shown on Sunday at 8:00 pm EST. You’ll want to set your DVRs now because this looks like a really cool project.
One of the hallmarks of any good sized car show is the opportunity to have your car compete for an award and Corvettes at Carlisle was no different. As one of the celebrity judges (my mom is so proud!) for the 2011 show, it was my job to wander the show field and find a Corvette worthy of the “Keith’s Choice” award.
There is a song by Pearl Jam called “Soon Forget” that opens with these lines: “Sorry is the fool who trades his soul for a corvette. Thinks he’ll get the girl he’ll only get the mechanic.” I was immediately reminded of those lyrics when I came across this 1958 Corvette barn car that was sold at a Canadian auction over the weekend.
The owner of this 1958 Corvette had the typical dream to restore this C1 straight axle but never got around too it. And so it sat outside for several years in the North Georgia weather with only a tarp to protect it. The time had finally come to sell it and so the owner placed an ad for the Corvette on Craigslist early Christmas morning.
The description calls this Corvette a “very unique find” and I think most of us would agree that it should have stayed lost. The same family in Tennessee has had the Corvette since 1968 and in 1972 they added the custom nose and bondo-crafted rear flares. The front actually looks like the 1958 Corvette XP-700 concept that was penned by Chuck Jordan, the GM head of design who passed away last week. Unfortunately, that’s all that this craigslist special has in common with XP-700.
