It was just a little over a week ago that public tours of the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, KY were suspended as officials at the plant said this was for “Manufacturing Advancements.” We’ve heard they are making some changes internally to the facility while the side entrance for workers and the public is also being renovated. But another line of thought had to due with GM wanting to build prototypes without the prying eyes of the public being able to see what they are doing, and it now appears that is no longer speculation.

Many model making firms have come and gone. Unfortunately, one of those casualties was the Franklin Mint. The Franklin Mint produced collectible vehicles, coins, chess sets and many other items and typically, these were made from pewter, silver or bronze. The Corvettes pictured are made of pewter, weigh over 15 pounds each and came in velvet lined boxes with painted wood plinths making their display a focal point of any office or man cave. These were priced at $1,000 and only 1,000 of each model were made. The two pictured here are the only Corvettes- a 1957 “Fuelie” and a 1963 Split-Window Stingray. Additional models included a Cobra 427 S/C and a Cobra Daytona Coupe. To round out the collection, a Delahaye 135 and a Mercedes 300 SL Roadster were also offered. All sold out and a new model was released every six months for a few years in the early 2000s.
