An Arctic White Corvette C8 ZR1 became the star of an unwanted spotlight in Cross County, Arkansas, after deputies say it tore past a traffic stop and triggered a high speed chase that ultimately led to the arrest of Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Commercial Appeal, the deputy on scene first noticed the Corvette not because of its looks, but because of its sound — the unmistakable roar of a V8 suddenly winding out as the driver “rapidly accelerated to a higher rate of speed.” Moments later, the sports car was already weaving through traffic, passing vehicles in a no passing zone, and pushing well beyond 100 mph as the deputy tried to close the gap.

The chase stretched for miles until the Corvette’s run ended behind a slower vehicle that pulled to the shoulder. With nowhere left to go, the driver stopped, and deputies moved in. Clarke was taken into custody and placed in the back seat of a patrol car while deputies searched the Corvette.

Inside the sports car, investigators found multiple bags labeled “100% pure Mirheyna Speciosa.” Clarke reportedly told deputies the substance was legal, identifying it as kratom. But according to the affidavit, the compounds mitragynine and 7 hydroxymitragynine are classified as Schedule I controlled substances in Arkansas. Deputies also reported finding a THC vape pen that field tested positive for marijuana.

Court documents show Clarke was initially charged with trafficking a controlled substance, fleeing in a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and improper passing. A separate speeding charge was added the following day. His bail was set at $25,000, which he posted on April 2.

Kratom, an herbal extract derived from a Southeast Asian tree, is legal in some states — including Tennessee for adults over 21 — but banned in Arkansas and several others. Health agencies, including the Mayo Clinic and the FDA, have warned about its risks, citing reports of addiction, adverse reactions, and even deaths.

For deputies in Cross County, though, the case began and ended with the Corvette — a car built for speed, sound, and attention — doing exactly what it was engineered to do, just in the worst possible context.

  1. This idiot makes $12.5 million per year and he isn’t that good.

  2. Sorry, I can’t stand any of these sports guys, and never watch any of them. They think they can do whatever they want, putting other people in danger. It’s always the same story.

  3. F’ing primadonna thinks because he’s an overpaid baller that he’s better than everyone else. Maybe GM should think about who they’re giving theses special allotments to. What GM is charging for these cars is another thing that pisses me off at over $200k Corvettes are no longer for the working man like they used to be, now you got $30k in just one option package, years ago (and not too long ago) if you wanted all the goodies it would cost you about 2-3 grand.

  4. Bill, the base Corvette starts off price wise in the low $70’s and being discounted into the 60″s at many dealers, that’s lower than a lot of pickup’s and medium size SUV’s on the market, I just picked up my 2 LT, that I ordered with $21,000 in options 3 weeks ago and got a lot of check marks on the options page, I am not wealthy, just a non college educated hard working blue collar man that saved money sensibly so I could get one and it’s an awesome car. Also it’s been a very long time ago where you could get a lot of options on a Corvette for 2 to 3 grand.

  5. The strange logic of irrationality! Some times people don’t act in their own self interest or perhaps, they just don’t think at all?

“Happy Easter, Corvette Blogger.” Thanks, Ray
