For classic car purists, it’s getting harder every year to find a Corvette that still looks and feels the way it did when it rolled out of the factory. That’s what makes this Ontario Orange 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible—now up for auction on eBay—so tempting.
The car, a four speed manual equipped exactly as it left the assembly line, retains nearly every major component it was born with: original block, heads, intake, carburetor, exhaust manifolds, starter, transmission, and differential. Even the glass and chrome are factory pieces. In an era when many early C3s have been modified, repainted, or heavily refreshed, this one stands out for its authenticity.
Its VIN, 1Z67K2S502069, ties it to Du Teau Chevrolet in Lincoln, Nebraska, where it was first delivered. The paper trail is unusually complete—original order sheet, window sticker, and owner’s manual all accompany the car. After a brief stop at another dealer, Miracle Mile Motors, the Corvette found its first long term home with Barry and Annette Bayer of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who purchased it in March 1972. It remained with the family for more than 50 years before being sold to a Corvette specialty dealer in Iowa, and then to its current owner in October 2023.
Today, the car resides in Austin, Texas, garage kept and exercised on short drives to keep everything in working order. The odometer shows just 39,000 original miles, and the car behaves like it—tight, straight, and free of shakes or rattles. The headlights and wiper door snap open as they should, and every gauge still functions.
Of course, originality comes with its own kind of patina. The factory Ontario Orange paint, now more than half a century old, shows the expected micro cracking and age lines. It looks sharp from a distance but reveals its age up close, the seller admits. The chrome, while intact, has lost some of its showroom shine. The weatherstripping is serviceable but not perfect. And the right side rear muffler carries a small rust hole.
Still, the bones are excellent. The frame and birdcage are solid, the soft top—replaced in the 1990s—remains in good shape aside from a small slit, and the interior has been refreshed with new seat covers and foam. Several key mechanical items have been addressed in the past three years, including stainless sleeved brake calipers, a new master cylinder, rebuilt distributor, new ignition components, and a freshly serviced A/C system that now blows cold. The original Rally wheels wear tires with fewer than 1,000 miles on them, and the spare remains the factory original.
The seller is upfront about both the strengths and the flaws, emphasizing that the car is sold as is but has been carefully maintained. For collectors who value originality over perfection, this Stingray represents a rare opportunity: a largely untouched, well documented, numbers matching C3 with a clear lineage and honest presentation.
With bidding already active and the reserve still unmet at $22,600 with five days left, the question becomes whether someone will step up to preserve this time capsule Corvette for its next chapter.
