In a world where hyperbole runs rampant, this 1969 Corvette L88 convertible more than earns its legend.
With just two days left in its SBX Cars auction, bidding has already climbed to $600,000 across 18 offers—and many expect the hammer price to soar closer to a million.
Only 116 L88 Corvettes were ever built, and this one has been racking up accolades for decades. It’s collected Bloomington awards like candy, earned a coveted Top Flight Award from the National Corvette Restorers Society, been shown coast to coast, and since 2008 has held a place in the Bloomington Gold Corvette Hall of Fame.
County Corvette, a shop with three decades of expertise restoring America’s sports car, has vetted this unrestored survivor, declaring it “free of substantial imperfections.” The seller notes the hood has been touched up and the side exhausts can be removed to return the car to factory originality.
Ironically, Chevrolet never pushed the L88 hard when it was new. Built from 1967 to 1969, the option was deliberately stripped of creature comforts—no air conditioning, no power steering, not even a radio—to discourage casual buyers. The $1,032.15 price tag for the L88 package, stacked on top of a $4,438 base price, only added to its exclusivity.
Chevy even downplayed its performance, rating the L88 at 430 horsepower when insiders knew it was capable of well over 500—and closer to 600 when tuned for racing. The big block 427 featured 12.5:1 compression, transistor ignition, aluminum intake, forged pistons and rods, hardened pushrods, a heavy duty rear end, and an aluminum cross flow radiator. It demanded 103 octane fuel to unleash its full fury.
Now, 56 years later, this LeMans Blue over Standard Black vinyl convertible – with only 19,886 miles – is hailed as “one of the premier examples” of an unrestored survivor.
Fully documented, its 427 L88 engine has been authenticated by Corvette expert Al Grenning. The winning bidder will inherit a trove of certificates earned over the past two decades, plus a tank sheet and a window sticker showing an MSRP of $6,839.70, both verified by NCRS.
Assembled in St. Louis on April 9, 1969, VIN 1946479721263 was delivered to GM Overseas Distribution in New York. Today, it stands as a time capsule—a rare Corvette that has lived up to every ounce of the hype.
