Not many of us can afford to buy the real thing when it comes to a Corvette L88. With only 216 built from 1967 to 1969, values for these cars have not surprisingly soared to stratospheric levels in recent years.
Now, though, the next best thing – a 1969 tribute – is being offered at no reserve on Hagerty Marketplace.
When the current owner bought the car in 2008, he discovered a 427 with the high-performance 3935439 GM block under the hood and decided to rebuild it as an aluminum-head tribute edition – making it more street friendly with lower compression and a hydraulic cam, however.
After the installation of high-performance internals including a forged Scat crank and rods, SRP pistons with 10.3:1 compression, a Lunati hydraulic roller camshaft, GM Performance aluminum heads, and a Holley 850 CFM double-pumper atop a GM Performance high-rise intake, the completed engine dyno-tested at 563 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque. It has been driven less than 250 miles since, and the rebuild paperwork is included.
Other features include a Tremec five-speed manual transmission with heavy-duty McLeod Street Extreme clutch, Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes, precision-balanced driveshaft, headers and dual exhaust, MSD ignition, a cleaned and painted undercarriage, a new cloth top, and air conditioning.
While the owner also added new seat covers, carpet, and racing harnesses, he elected to enjoy the car still in primer, noting that some areas still need fiberglass repairs, hardtop has a small hole that needs to be filled, and paint on door panel metal strips is scratched.
After spending hundreds of hours working on this car, the seller says it’s a unique experience to drive the car but it is now time for someone else to benefit from his hard work.

Sell it on Mecum and some fool will pay huge dollars.
I’d call it a modified Corvette with the L89 option. Nothing on this car looks L88 except the hood. And yes, some jerk on B-J or Mecum with too much ego, alcohol, and money would pay way too much for this car.
