Corvettes for Sale: 2,400-Mile 1993 Corvette ZR1 Offered on Bring a Trailer

Some enthusiasts who have seen this low-mileage 1993 Corvette ZR-1 on a current Bring a Trailer listing say they would have driven the wheels off this time capsule by now.

But this 405-horsepower black-on-black behemoth has covered only 2,400 miles in the 32 years since it was delivered new in California. Until two years ago, it had been with that original owner, the father of the seller’s friend.

Now, the third owner is offering the car on BaT, where the current bid is $20,000, with five days remaining in the auction.

Despite the low mileage, the car isn’t perfect. A walk-around video seems to show a few nicks on the front bumper and hood, and the windshield has delaminated in the corners. Some may notice that the TPMS tire monitoring system light is on, and the seller explains that “when the new tires were mounted they told me that all the sensors were working but they did not have a tool to reset it since it was still running an OBD1 ECU. I didn’t go any further since all the tire pressures are spot on. I didn’t want to have the light disconnected, as some suggested.”

When the seller bought the car from the estate, a second top was not included and he initially thought it had been misplaced over the years. After doing a little research, he now believes the car may have only come with the clear Bronze top, which he thinks has never been off the car since new. That would be surprising since the window sticker includes a charge of $950 for the roof package. Regardless, he has purchased a ’93 painted top in maroon and storage bag that will be included with the sale.

Despite these very minor flaws, this 40th anniversary ZR-1 remains a menacing figure on the road, powered by the LT5 double overhead cam V8 engine that was a collaboration between GM and Lotus, with Mercury Marine in charge of assembly at its Oklahoma plant. The ’90-’92 ZR-1s had “only” 375 horsepower, but that figure increased to 405 beginning in ’93 thanks to modifications to the cylinder heads and valvetrain.

All ZR-1s had a wider rear end than the base models, along with a much wider price tag. The upgraded engine added a whopping $31,683 to the price of the car at a time when the base coupe was only $34,595. This example, no. 89 that year, listed for $67,878, and a copy of the original window sticker is included.

With the base models getting a similar but narrower rear end treatment beginning in the second year of ZR-1 production in 1991 and the base horsepower climbing to 300 horsepower in ’93, sales began to decline for the much more expensive ZR-1 that didn’t offer much more bang for the buck. Chevy decided to discontinue the ZR-1 after ’95, so they divided the remaining engines into three batches – 448 for ’93, 448 for ’94, and 448 for ’95.

According to the seller: “This 1993 Corvette ZR-1 is a true time capsule with only 2,400 original miles. It’s in outstanding condition throughout and remains unmodified—exactly how you’d want to find one of the final-year C4 ZR-1s. The car has never been judged in an NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society) event, but I believe it would score very highly for originality and condition. That opportunity remains open for the next owner, should they choose to pursue it.

With such low mileage, it’s a shame this ZR-1 will never likely see its real purpose as actually driving it now would reduce its value considerably.

  1. “He who no drive Corvette to keep mileage low is like no playing with women from conquered village to maintain virginity for next warrior.”

  2. That’s the biggest drawback about these low mileage Vettes. If one starts to drive it like it should be it would lose much value and the money paid would be wasted. Better to buy a driven Vette and enjoy it and not pay extreme $ for it.
