Car enthusiasts like to throw around terms like “unique” and “one-of-a-kind” a little too loosely sometimes.
But this 1965 Corvette convertible definitely deserves to be described that way. After all, it’s apparently the only car in the world that’s covered with coins!
We first told you about the so-called “Penny Corvette” when it was up for sale back in 2019, and now it’s being offered again on eBay out of Windermere, Florida, with an asking price of $37,500. Considering that the car is covered with an estimated 25,000 to 35,000 coins – mostly pennies though there are also some scattered nickels, dimes, half dollars, silver dollars, and Susan B. Anthony dollars – if the new owner ever hits hard times, he could come up with a few hundred dollars just by stripping the coins off the car.
A guy named Charlie Regini started the conversion back in 1982, taking six months to completely cover the Corvette with the coins, even some under the hood and on the undercarriage. The current owner even as vintage photos showing the transformation in process. That might be the cheapest “paint job” possible, huh?
The modified Corvette was reportedly used for many years as a fund-raiser car, including for the March of Dimes, but had been sitting in a storage facility for many years when the seller acquired it.
A non-original 283 engine resides under the hood, but the current owner has made several mechanical improvements, including a new battery, fuel tank, sending unit, all four rubber brake lines, four calipers, four rotors, and master cylinder. He says more work remains, including the rebuilding of the carburetor and the replacing of a bad u-joint. The bias ply tires are believed to have been on the car for the past 30 or 40 years and will also need to be replaced.
Other features include a two-speed Powerglide transmission, a hardtop (no soft top), power steering, and a big-block hood.
The black interior actually looks pretty good, with the most noticeable flaw being a split on the bottom of the passenger seat.
“If you take this car to a show you will be amazed with the crowd it draws,” the seller concludes.
