We’ve been Calling it the ZORA for Years, but Chevy Refers to the Ultimate AWD Corvette as the ZR1e

The Electrified Performance Hybrid Option Previously Known as the ZORA turns the ZR1 into the ZR1e

We’ve been hearing rumblings ever since the C8 ZR1 was first introduced nearly a year ago in Miami that the Corvette ZR1 would be the top of the C8 model lineup and not the rumored ZORA with its electrified front-mounted motor with estimates of 1,224 horsepower. Tadge even said it himself during a walkaround interview with Car and Driver that the ZR1 would be “the range topper” as it had been in previous generations, and he also said the ZR1 is “the most expensive Corvette we’ll be doing” in that same interview as well.

Personally, I had been holding out hope that there would be a standalone ZORA model as the ultimate C8 Corvette. We felt the ZORA would be a lasting tribute to Corvette’s first chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, who passionately campaigned for a mid-engine Corvette during his 25 year tenure at GM but never saw it come to fruition. During the C8’s development stages the team utilized the “Zora head” as a security measure for accessing the development areas where the car was being built, and Chevy even prominently displayed several “Zora head” logos on the C8s as Easter Eggs with his profile picture being on the windshield through the 2024 model before being replaced by Tadge Juechter’s likeness on the 2025s.

Recently, our friend Rick Conti talked about a ZR1e model showing up within the GM ordering system, and it has come up again thanks to our friends over the Corvette Action Center who just created a C8 ZR1 Registry based on data from GM’s ordering system.

The CAC ZR1 Registry has listings for all the 2025 Corvette ZR1s being produced as well as the 58 experimental units that have already been produced for the 2026 model year. That’s were things get interesting as you can see the model, exterior and interior colors and the trim group for each of the builds. Clicking on the “Profile” link brings up all the data on that particular car and that’s where we see the model listed as “1YS07-2026 CORVETTE ZR1e.”

The CAC found the ZR1e model name listed for those 2026 Corvette ZR1 prototypes that are equipped with the “HP1 – Front Axle, Electrified Propulsion” option – the same RPO code used for the 160-hp electric motor that’s equipped on the performance hybrid E-Ray model. Only those cars produced with the HP1 option come up as the 2026 Corvette ZR1e, while those without it are just shown as being the ZR1 model.

Our final point is these ZR1e listings all have the LT7 engine code, so with all this information and knowing it comes from directly from GM is all we need to conclude that the ZORA is indeed a selectable option on the 2026 Corvette ZR1s.

The guys at the Corvette Action Center believe that this Hysteria Purple 2026 Corvette ZR1e with VIN 020EX is the first of the 2026 experimental Corvettes to be equipped with the front electric motor. It’s a 3LZ trim with the Carbon Fiber Aero Package (TOM), ZTK Performance Package, and the 10-Spoke visible carbon fiber wheels (SU1). It also has the “HP1 – Front Axle, Electrified Propulsion” option making it the ZR1e as the printed model name says. This pilot vehicle was constructed over a year ago on June 5, 2024 with General Motors being the owner and delivering dealer.

Earlier this week, new spy photos emerged of the ZORAs driving the Nürburgring as the Corvette engineers are back in Germany with three models to test, and perhaps two timed hot laps planned according to our ‘Ring photographer. Both ZORAs were identified with their hybrid track stickers on the rear windows while the E-Ray-style vertical cooling radiator were visible on the front driver’s corners. We believe that Chevrolet will soon be making an announcement about the ZR1e and that it will be included in 2026 ordering. As of yet, we only have the 2026 Corvette Order Guide which GM amends all the time as new equipment is added. As there hasn’t yet been any allocations or orders placed for the 2026 ZR1, we believe it will still be included in the ’26 model rollover as we are still waiting on pricing and the 2026 configurator to go live.

Oh, speaking of the ZR1 configurator, remember how it went live back in February for the 2025 ZR1, but it was also showing the E-Ray front radiator and some extra carbon fiber trim on the front wheel wells? Now we know why, because the ZORA was always going to be a ZR1. GM’s programmers just forgot to hide those options for the 2025 model.

Not everyone we spoke to about this possibility was happy to see an “e” associated with the legendary ZR1 nameplate. Another E-Ray owner I know called it a terrible idea because he believes GM did such a bad job in marketing the E-Ray to the point that even today some still think it’s purely electric because of the E-Ray name. Now, GM is doubling down by purposely marketing the ZR1 as electrified when in reality it’s only those ZR1s with the HP1 option. Naming it the ZR1e could cause even more confusion about the hybrid performance model and its capabilities.

As I try to remind those who ask about why I choose to buy an E-Ray over the Z06 or Stingray, my response is simple…it’s all about the All-Wheel Drive and putting power to the pavement. It now appears that the ZR1e also has that capability, so those driving other exotics better look out because we expect to see the ZORA aka ZR1e putting down some remarkable performance times.
