The Existence of a Corvette SUV Could be Fake News

Things just got interesting, Corvette fans! In the 2020s, we’ve become so accustomed to knowing exactly what the Corvette Team has up its proverbial sleeve that this week’s conflicting speculative reports on the existence of a Corvette SUV have become “appointment television,” as they say.

What we know and what we’ve heard up to this point:

  • General Motors is heavily invested in becoming an all-electric automaker, to the tune of over $35 Billion.
  • The public has yet to embrace the transition to electric vehicles (even with the most aggressive product push in industry history – with a large helping hand from the federal government – EVs still only accounted for around 5% of US new car sales in 2022). This market trepidation is especially true for EVs that don’t wear a Tesla badge, as Elon Musk’s company accounted for nearly 70% of total US EV deliveries last year.
  • Because of this situation, automakers are going all-out to try to convince John Q Public that their EVs are cool too, even if it means 1. dusting off nostalgic silhouettes like GM did by bringing back the HUMMER for an electric encore or VW’s upcoming Microbus and Scout remakes, or 2. tarnishing their most valuable intellectual property as Ford did when it slapped the legendary Mustang badge on the faux grille of a plug-in crossover.
  • General Motors is expected to follow the Blue Oval’s lead by creating a new Corvette sub-brand that not only features America’s Sports Car, but also plays home to an electric sedan in the mold of the Porsche Taycan, and perhaps even a ‘Vette-themed SUV.
  • Much to the chagrin of Corvette loyalists, speculation about the possibility of an electric Corvette Sport Utility has been heating up for months.
  • Last Wednesday, Car and Driver gave us a little relief with their report that an SU’Vette reveal was imminent, BUT it wouldn’t be an EV, at least not at first.

The New Wrinkle

Now, Muscle Cars & Trucks, an online publication that has been very reliable in their Corvette reporting so far this generation, dropped a contradictory bombshell report that claims no such Corvette SUV exists. MC&T maintains that while there could be some $12 Billion for GM to gain by expanding the Corvette’s marketplace footprint, the General won’t be affixing Crossed Flags to an SUV any time soon. The report expects the electric performance sedan to materialize soon, which makes sense as GM engineers have been spied testing Taycans at the Milford Proving Grounds in Michigan, but insists that all SUV gossip is “simply not true.”

MC&T goes on to admit that a money-printing machine in the form of a high-riding Corvette hatchback IS under consideration at the Ren Cen, but it is being held up in the design process. If the company is going to commit sacrilege, it at least wants to make sure that it gets the look right, and “finding an exterior design that is agreeable with executives” has proven to be a tall task.

What’s nice about this reporting war is that time will eventually reveal who was correct and who was just blowing smoke for the sake of clicks, likes, and sales. Until which time a winner is vindicated, we have our popcorn ready; we might not like all of these developments, but it sure makes for entertaining news cycles!

  1. The minivan came and lasted some 40 years, so what will be the eventual replacement for the SUV?

  2. There is some advertisement for “the ninja woodfire grill” that shows up for me only when viewing corvette blogger pages. The ad is two guys talking and ends with “The outdoors just got a whole lot more delicious”. There is no video of this ad visible anywhere on the page when this happens. All video ads show as muted and no ad on the pages is for a grill. This ad audio will repeat every two minutes or so. This makes it impossible to mute the audio without just turning my phone volume off. It also makesnit impossible for me like that product. Please speak to your add provider and get this fixed. No other ad audio does this.

  3. The add also plays with a terrible echo sometimes, as if it’s playing 10 versions of the audio at once slightly offset, at the same time. I would hope that your page has no unmuted advertisements at any time and this is just an error.

  4. Do you notice that 95% of the many car ads during races on TV are EVs? They are shoving this crap down Joe Six Pack’s throat. Just like Bud lite and Covid jab ads, not going to work.

  5. If SUV’s have proven to be huge money makers for so many Marks from Rolls Royce on down, why not Corvette? A SUV Ferrari is about to hit the streets.
