Police in California have located the C8 Corvette involved in a racing incident with a Mustang captured on surveillance video crashing into two other vehicles last month.

Now the silver Stingray won’t be involved in another such race for at least a month after Vacaville authorities impounded the car for 30 days following a recent stop by Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies because of an alert that had been placed earlier by Vacaville Police.

“We wrote a 30 day impound for the vehicle so that becomes known to any officer who runs the plates of the car,” Vacaville Police Lt. Chris Lechuga said.

Whether the Corvette driver was the same one who was racing the Mustang on I-80 around 8 p.m. on May 19 and then fled from the scene after the Ford crashed into two more vehicles while rounding a curve at the end of an exit ramp is still being investigated by police, so no arrest has been made so far.

According to earlier police reports, two other cars were driving on Peabody Road near Cliffside Drive when the black Mustang and the silver Corvette “came barreling down the Cliffside Drive off-ramp from I-80.” The Mustang then lost control and hit those two vehicles, “sending glass and plastic flying and causing significant damage,” while sending one of the occupants to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Corvette successfully made the turn and then fled the scene.

The Mustang driver, 22-year-old Alexis Nieto Salinas, faces two misdemeanor charges – suspicion of a motor vehicle exhibition of speed on a highway and driving a vehicle with willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property.

Whoever was behind the wheel of the Corvette on May 19 could face similar charges, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Vacaville Police Officer Todd Huffaker at (707) 449-5200.
