One of the reasons why we love watching the collector car auctions is that anything can happen when two buyers (or more) are all vying for the same car. Add the allure of a televised event, free-flowing drinks, and the egos of those bidding and now you’ve some real entertainment! We just saw that happen during Wednesday’s broadcast of the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction involving a base 2012 Corvette Coupe.
This C6 Corvette Coupe from 2012 is a low mile example with just 65 miles showing on the odometer. What made the car special was that it was owned by the late Dave Ressler whose Corvette collection included the 1953 Corvette VIN 003 and the special one-off Le Mans Blue 2009 Corvette ZR1 with VIN 001, and both were purchased previously at Barrett-Jackson. Several cars from the Ressler collection are being offered at Barrett-Jackson which included the 2012 Corvette.
The car itself is unremarkable at best, and even the documentation shows the car was once offered new by Ressler Motors for $46,948 based on a mirror hanger included in the sale. The Torch Red Corvette carries the VIN of #00868 and it was one of 2,820 base coupes built during the year. Purists will enjoy the 6-speed manual transmission that comes with the car, but there is still nothing really special about this Corvette.
Road and Track tells us that another Ressler Corvette offered during the auction – a 2006 Corvette Z06 with 13 miles since new – was also sold but only fetched $77,000. Again, great money for a C6 Z06 but nothing like the dollars spent on the 430-hp 2012 Corvette Coupe.
Some on r/cars Reddit are suggesting that perhaps there were some shenanigans happening behind the scenes – or even worse – money laundering. But attempting this via a very high-profile public auction that involves two or more bidders just doesn’t pass the smell test. Perhaps it was just bidders who really wanted Dave Ressler’s low mileage 2012 Corvette.
In the video below, the camera is only focused on the car and we can’t see the bidders who are battling for the Torch Red C6. However, you can hear the bids being called out through the sale and they don’t stop until it’s hammered sold for $300,000. With the sales commission, the out-the-door price was a whopping $330,000! That’s what we in the business call “Well-Sold!”
The auction action for this Corvette starts at 5:09:45 in the video below. We’ve embedded it with the clock to start there:

Unbelievable! What an idiot!
Why?? I agree there is something going on. What a perfect way to launder money.
OK, This is a great example of way too many alcoholic beverages being consumed during this event. This buyer became instant friends with Craig Jackson in his little party.
