“Who’s gonna fill their shoes?” goes the classic George Jones country song about singing greats of the past.
The same could be said for the longtime mechanics who have kept vintage cars rolling down the road, decades after they were first built. Once they’re retired, who’s gonna fix those cars?
To try to help solve that dilemma, the chairman of Goettl Air Conditioning & Plumbing, Ken Goodrich, donated a 1978 Corvette on Friday to the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas.
Goodrich had earlier purchased the red Corvette at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas with the intention all along to donate it back to the college’s Department of Applied Technologies and have students work on it.
“I was a little unsure about how these younger kids would take it, but the proof’s in the pudding,” Goodrich said, turning to glance at the huge crowd of students checking out the Corvette. “They’re right here, you know, they love that car, so I think it’s gonna be a great asset to the program.”
“What I think is most important about it,” Goodrich added, “is they have a program learning how to fix the modern cars, but restoring classic cars and more valuable cars is a great trade as well.”
Goodrich says he has always been a champion for the trades and appreciates the various skills being taught at the College of Southern Nevada, where more than 150 degrees and certificates are offered, including Automotive Technology programs in Alternative Fuels and Hybrid Technician, Collision Repair, Master Technician, Performance Technician, and Service Technician.
Once the students complete their work on the Corvette, it will be auctioned off again at Barrett-Jackson, with the proceeds going back to the school to teach more automotive students.
