Here’s a C4 Corvette you don’t see every day. This red 1990 coupe is one of just 23 R9G models built that year. To add to the provenance, the car is being offered on Bring a Trailer by Lance Miller of Carlisle Events on behalf of his sister.
The Corvette Challenge series with its factory built C4’s ended in 1989, but Corvette wasn’t done racing yet. Onward to the SCCA World Challenge Series in 1990. To complete there, Chevrolet built 23 cars with RPO R9G which designated the cars’ usage in the World Challenge Series.
R9G Corvettes were equipped with the new-for-1990 FX3 Selective Ride and Handling Package which included adjustable shocks on top of the Z51 Performance Handling Package and its heavy-duty springs, stabilizer bars, larger brakes, and power-steering cooler. Power is supplied by the 5.7l L98 engine producing 245hp and 345ft-lbs of torque. All cars had black cloth interiors, manual air conditioning, and 6-speed ZF manual transmissions. Most were snapped up by racers like Tommy Morrison, Kim Baker, and others for track duty. Several cars, though, were never converted like this example here.
This car was purchased new by Corvette Hall of Famer Chip Miller, founder of Carlisle Events. He held the car until 2000 when he gifted it to his daughter. According to the listing, “the car was featured in local car shows and used as a parade car, but was otherwise driven sparingly, accumulating just under 1,700 miles.”
Perusing the photos, we see a car essentially in as-new condition as you’d expect given the low mileage. You’ll even note Dave McLellan’s signature on the intake.
In the comments, Lance Miller tells us that it’s always been stored in a climate-controlled environment and that the fluids have been changed and the car has been exercised periodically to keep things in top shape. He even recants the story of his own R9G that he was gifted, though that car had much more “interesting” life:
It reminds me of my own R9G story—my dad gave me one too, though I couldn’t resist making it my own. I swapped in a World Challenge engine with more horsepower, dropped it a couple inches, and slapped on some Dymags. It was perfect for cruising around West Palm Beach while I was in college.
One Easter Day, my roommate and I were on a mission to grab a honey-baked ham. The line was insane, so we ditched that plan and instead hit up a winding country club road a buddy had told me about. On the way back, I decided to push the car a little harder, really let it rip. Big mistake! The rear kicked out, and when I corrected it, we ended up straddling the center median. I thought I could pull it off, but the rear tire blew. The car spun, flew off the road, down a ditch, and slammed into a boulder by my left hip, then spun again before meeting a tree head-on.
I scrambled to jump out the window, since the door was jammed, and just as I got out, the airbag went off. Needless to say, the car was wrecked. It was eventually rebuilt, but it was never quite the same.
So yeah, my sister’s R9G? Let’s just say it’s in way better shape than mine ever was!
The sale includes a host of glovebox items, original sales paperwork, service records, old Corvettes at Carlisle literature, and old Miller family photos. R9G Corvettes don’t show up very often and this car presents a unique opportunity to acquire one from one of the premier car collections out there.
As we write this, the high bid stands at $25,000 and the auction closes on Friday, October 25 at 1:20pm eastern so there’s still plenty of time left to get your bids in.

Lance, Lance, Lance — the codes are listed in alphabetical order — its near the end of the 2nd row!!!
Of the 23 units of 1990 R9G cars, only 7 were Bright Red (81U). The car in this article was the third Bright Red R9G built.
And just a heads up: Not all R9G cars had black cloth interiors: One of the 5 units of Black R9G cars had black leather (VIN 11812); the only Dark Red Metallic R9G car had black leather (VIN 11796); and one of the 5 units of Competition Yellow R9G cars had a saddle cloth interior (VIN 11842).
Yup, from my book, All 1990-1996 Corvette Colors, Codes & Quantities, pages 46-47.
