Sometimes a person arrives at a point in life where he has to throw in the towel.
That apparently is the case with the 75-year-old owner of this 1965 Corvette convertible who admits he’s not able to finish its restoration.
Due to health issues, he’s parting with his vintage Sting Ray through a no-reserve auction on eBay slated to close Monday evening. Interest has been high, with 45 bids climbing to a peak of $28,672.
That leaves little time for an in-person inspection in DeKalb, Illinois, and readers on Barn Finds, where we spotted this car, seem to urge a modicum of caution when proceeding further, with concerns about the frame, birdcage, and more turning it into a money pit.
Indeed, while the seller candidly admits this Sting Ray needs a complete restoration, there do seem to be some bright spots for a potential new owner, including the fact that it rolls and steers easily, at least making the task of loading it up on a trailer easier.
On the other hand, the replacement engine (perhaps a 327) doesn’t run, so it could require a rebuild or perhaps even an upgrade to a more powerful option if someone with deep pockets wins the bidding war.
The paint on the body looks shiny enough in photos and might be acceptable for awhile, but the hardtop has definitely seen better days with paint wearing off in several spots. Unfortunately, it’s the only choice available on this car as the ragtop is said to be missing. One budget-friendly alternative might be to just remove the hardtop and only drive the car on sunny days, which is what some Corvette owners already do anyway.
The black interior, meanwhile, could obviously use some new seat covers, but the console, door panels, and dash appear to be in acceptable condition.
If this car sells at or below $30,000, would you – and your wallet – be willing to take on the challenge of restoring it?

In answer to your question, no.
In my opinion, if I purchased this car, it would take easily additional $100,000+ to make it right.
I paid $20k for mine, I thought that was a lot for a non-running car, at least it had a re-machined 396, 5,000 more in a in a new 5-speed, can’t wait to drive it!
