Picking up a brand new Corvette is always a fun experience (from what I’ve been told) and recently our friend Mike Brink of the Brink of Speed YouTube Channel just took delivery of his new 2024 Corvette E-Ray VIN 0496. You can check out his delivery video here.
Mike was still in the break-in process with just 206 miles showing on the odometer when he got a check engine light. After calling OnStar, they diagnosed the car as having a Drive Motor Control Module issue and the OnStar rep told him to get the car into the dealership within a week. Mike reports that the front drive motor seemed to be working correctly while he was waiting to get it into the shop.
Taking the car into Classic Chevrolet, a service technician named Hayden diagnosed the “Check Motor Light” and said it was actually due to the Drive Motor Clutch Actuator. He says the actuator is located on the side of the electric drive motor and its job is to engage and disengage the motor’s differential. Hayden explains the process of getting into the car to reach that component, and he says it took about a day and half to complete the process as it was his first time working on the E-Ray.
As the E-Ray is a new model for Chevrolet, Hayden contacted GM Engineering to report the issue to engineers in Michigan. He was told that this is something they have been seeing, and they believe it’s an issue during the manufacturing process that is causing the actuator to lose communication.
As Mike goes to pick up his car, he is surprised to see his E-Ray with a new set of Forgedlite Wheels from his friend Darren.

My 2024 200 Mile E-Ray CEL became a Major PROBLEM! That is correct ladies and gentlemen, my 200-mile 2024 C8 E-Ray already has a check engine light on! Here’s what I found out about it!

Is that the new Penitentiary Gray?
Could it be that these cars are getting too technically advanced for their own good. I suspect we will see more and more of this from all models.
Doesn’t sound like a “Major Problem” to me. Sounds like a gremlin of the type commonly encountered on early production vehicles. If this sort of things bothers you, don’t buy an early production vehicle!
Ya so what, it’s an all new design of course it will have bugs to work out. Didn’t sound like that big a deal anyway. People get butt hurt way to easy these days, and it didn’t strand you so stop whining.
This is just another example of why I don’t like to buy the first year model of an any new vehicle. I prefer to wait at least a year to let them get the bugs worked out before I buy.
Something tells me that in 50 years, people won’t be restoring these cars. They will have been thrown away because of their complexity.
LOL That’s what the you tube clown gets for volunteering to be a Beta Tester for GM. EVs and Barra are both a joke.
Little QC at GM. My dealer said they have replaced too many C8 transmissions and Z06 engines.
Keep it simple, lads. Happiness is a $100k depreciating asset that is at least trouble-free unless it is your fault.
This is a YouTuber story, therefore it is total BS.
What was he really doing that caused the issue? Hint: He wasn’t driving it that way you are supposed to during break-in.
Enough with the YT fanboy crap.
Please be patient, and not jump to conclusion. Gm is on a leaning curve with the C8 E-Ray. I am confident, GM engineers have the knowledge, expertise and resources to correct this simple issue.
Many thanks,
Ray
Changed the wheels? What was wrong with the factory wheels that look better to me. That was a favor?

According to Tadge’s off hand comment on the Jay Leno YouTube review of E-Ray, this car might be the most complex consumer product you can buy. I interpreted that remark of momentary pride as an accidental oops. However, when all of the bugs are worked out after a few years of consumer “field testing”, it should be safe to buy one with a fair amount of reliability and confidence. Unlike some egos that have to be “first”, I know better than to buy the first year of production of any new, very complex car design. But I hope that this car succeeds. It’s the only way to get the knowledge and experience required to make a fairly reliable Zora some day…
Bobba….if I’m going to pay that much for a vehicle it’s better hold up to how ever I wanna drive it……break it in like your gonna drive it and u want have as many probs….
