[VIDEO] C&S Corvettes on the C6 Corvette’s Infamous Gas Smell

Our friends at C&S Corvettes are taking a deeper dive into why your C6 Corvette may be smelling like gas every time you fill up your tank.

It’s a known issue for the C6 and it’s caused by the heavy use of plastics in the fuel system which can become brittle and crack with age. With the 2005 Corvette now closing in on being 20 years old, more and more of these cars will likely need this repair.

This is where things get interesting as the C6 Corvette uses a saddle-bag style fuel tank that has a separate tank behind each seat and a connecting tube that fills and keeps the fuel levels even in both. “Lyle the Corvette Guy” at C&S Corvettes says due to the very tight packaging of parts underneath, it is best to drop the exhaust, rear suspension, and transaxle to gain access and not risk breaking any other brittle plastic parts on the fuel system.

And while you have already done the work to remove the suspension and transmission to fix the fuel system, this can be a good time to do some additional preventative maintenance such as replacing your clutch or rebuilding the torque tube:

“I would highly recommend you talk to your shop or if you’re doing this in your own shop, seriously consider pulling the torque tube out and rebuilding it, replacing the bearings, the couplers, and all that stuff. You do the rear main engine seal, if you have a stick shift car it’ be a great time to do a clutch. Again, you’re trying to maximize the things that you can accomplish while in doing this giant chunk of Labor.”
